I am looking at the Onkyo 906 OR the Denon 989 or the Denon 380ci... any thoughts? I am currently using the Onkyo 805 and am looking for more HDMI inputs AND the ability to update if necessary over the net... Which I believe the Onkyo 906 allows and the Denon 380ci; correct? Either way, just wanted some input.

Thxs in advance!

805 is a great AVR. howabout an automatic HDMI switcher instead?

SIMA VS-HD51 HDMI switcher 5 inputs 1 output $139.99

IMHO - Internet update is overrated.

Thxs for response... just wondering why do U think Internet update is overrated? My 805 recently needed an update and to put it simply was a major pain in the a**.
I think a hdmi switch would be a better investment. The 805 is THX ultra and 50 lbs. I doubt you could really improve your system that much with the upgrade. Monoprice has manual switches that are even cheaper than the automatic ones.

I suggest you use the excess funds to upgrade your subs to a DIY one. I bet for the price of a 906 you can make a nasty sub that would give your system a much bigger upgrade. Acoustical treatments would also be a better investment. At least hang some stuff on the walls. :)

I suppose you could also get an external amp, but on an 805 I see it as highly unnecessary. Because it's power supply is already so massive.

I just don't see a good reason for you to upgrade. A switch will solve your current problem and save your money for a better place to upgrade.

Just my 0.02$

When you say needed, what exactly did you gain? What version of FW did you previously have? I'm on 1.06, and I've not once considered bothering to upgrade.

I agree with everyone else here in that spending 1k to simply get internet update ability is a pretty ridiculous misallocation of money. My bluray player doesn't update over internet either, but that's not a reason for me to go buy a brand new one. OTOH, the 906 has some video features, dual hdmi outs, aud dyn vol/eq, etc, etc. Even with that all combined, do you really need that stuff? If for video processing, I would venture to guess that you will get much better stuff with a stand alone with that money. If you have successfully implemented 1.08, do not expect another FW. Because the X06 models are out already, as you know.

Your Denon choices are lateral moves. Except for the internet thing perhaps.

1k can get you many other additions that will have much more meaningful impact. Room treatments, sub upgrades, speaker upgrades, HT seating, video processor, you name it. JMO.

I just bought the NR906 and I don't believe it does updates via the Internet. I think it's depot RS232 only, but I could be wrong. It sucks for me because I'm 2-1/2 hours from a depot.

Anyway here are my first impressions:
  • It's flipping heavy! But everything is laid out beautifully.
  • An amazing amount of punch! I didn't expect to hear a big difference in music upgrading from a Pioneer 1014 but the difference is very-very apparent. You feel the impact right in the gut.
  • The latest Audigy is fantastic. A huge upgrade from the Pioneer speaker setup system.
  • More modes than I could ever find a use for and I'd need a PhD to explore them all.
On the downside:
  • The IR receiver for the remote control is very stubborn. I started out with an SR876 and the IR receiver for the remote died in about a week 876. I returned it for the NR906 and its remote works much better but the on/off command is still very stubborn!
  • The Sirius receiver antennas could be easier to find or at least better documented.
  • The documentation is thick but the advanced setup and 906 specific sections assume you're an expert. Hint: if someone writes a good Idiots Guide to optimizing the 906 I'd probably buy it. ;)
The 906 specific "net" features:
  • Does not play FLAC files across the network as advertised. I'm still troubleshooting this but I suspect that it's a MS Media center issue. The 906 sees the file and tries to play it but I get a "connecting" message that goes on forever.
  • It does play MP3 files and WMA files but is extremely picky about how they are encoded. It took several tries to find a flavor that the receiver liked.
  • Internet radio works but I haven't played with it a lot yet.
  • I haven't tried the USB playback method but was very disappointed that the only USB port is on the front. I'd have liked it on the back so I could just play music from a USB hard drive instead of having a bulky music server in the rack.
  • With as many physical inputs as it accepts there really should be more that two assignable AUX choices.
Bottom line it's a great receiver (4 out of 5 stars) only downgraded from a 4.5 of 5 by the stubborn remote receiver and the not quite ready for prime time "net" features. In your case unless you really-really want the "net" features with their current limitations then I'd keep the 805. Just add an Impact Acoustics 4 port HTMI 1.3 switch and you should be good to go.

I hope this helps.

I believe the 805 weighs the same as the 906.

Question: Is the 906 really capable of vertical stretch for anamorphic projector setups? Anything about that in the manual?

Most AVRs will never need an update. If youneed one and it was hard to put on sorry! But it is
pretty easy to burn a CD or copy files to a USB flash drive. The internet capable just provides you a more conveninet tranfer media. Again, IMHO, there are just not a large nmuber of Intenret upgrades. For example, see how many AVRs have an Internet upgrade capability.

Take Care,

P.S.- I like the 906 and seriously considered it when I bought the Marantz8002.

I'm not sure about the weight but I think there is a couple of pounds difference between the 876 and the 906. As for your question I honestly wish I could help but I have no idea.
