New Receiver. No Video. Help!

Picked up a Yamaha HTR-5940 today. I can get video from the DVD but not my satellite receiver. Here's the setup:

- DVD player component/optical to Yamaha
- Yamaha component to plasma TV
- Satellite receiver svideo/optical to Yamaha.

I've triple checked the connections and tried different cables. I can get audio from the satellite receiver, but no video. I switch the Input selector to DVD and no problem with the DVD video and audio. I even tried to go component from the satellite receiver to the Yamaha but no picture. Any ideas??

Update:
I ran an svideo cable from the receiver to the tv and now the satellite video works. So what my trial and error figured out is that if I go component from the receiver to the TV, then ALL other components (sat receiver & DVD) must also be connected via component. WTF? My satellite reciver doesn't have component so this means that I can't use component at all? My old crappy RCA receiver didn't have this issue. Some of my devices were svido, some component and I always got video. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.

I looked it up on the 5950, and it's the same on my 5660, so I think it will be the same on your 5940: in the menu "video conv." must be set to 'on'.

How exactly do you get to "vid conv"? Thanks.

on the remote, press the button labled "amp" than the button labled "menu" then press the button with the down arrow untill the desplay reads 'option menu' then press the ">" button to the right, the desplay should say somthing like 'display set', press the down arrow untill the display says somthing like 'v conv.', then press ">" this should take you to where you can chose 'yes' or 'no'.

I hope that helps some, it may not be quite those steps, I was using the manual for the 5850 off Yamahas website.

if you need more help, please post agan.

Just looked it up and this piece of junk doesn't have video up conversion. What a crock. Now I can't watch my TV and DVD without changing cables. Back to the store with this unit!

you could try a 5950 (or a 5850, thay are cheeper :D ), or just run a s-video cable to the TV.

Try connecting dvd and satellite directly to tv. Use the receiver only for audio. Dvd via component to tv and dvd audio to receiver. Then satellite to tv via s video and audio to receiver. This should bypass the receiver lack of video up conversion and allows it do the audio only. You will however have to assign the proper inputs for each component for both the tv and receiver.
ie: dvd in comp & satellite in s video on the tv and audio in coax or fiber optic on the receiver!!

This might help:)

Well I went and traded the HTR-5490 for the RX-559. Much much better. More money but does what I need. Thanks for all the help.

Hello All...

Im having a bit of the same problem. Its been a problem since I purchased the receiver and its a tad bit old now, but i need a resolution.

The receiver i have is a Yamaha HTR-5280. I mainly purchased it for my PS2. Up to this day I still have it hooked into the PS2 (actually the only thing hooked to it)

This is how my configuration sits now..

PS2 to HTR-5280 via S-Video and Optical
HTR to a P.O.S. 32" TV via S-Video

Here is the problem.. I recently purchased a Wii for my son and I want to hook it up like the PS2 is. But instead of using the DVD input im using the D-TV/LD input.

The cables im using are the standard composite cables that come with the Wii. Like the original poster is having, im getting no picture. It doesnt matter what input I use with the composite cables, it does not work. Even the front panel inputs (designed for games consoles) do not work. I have even disconnected the PS2 and still nothing.

Ive looked in the owners manual and found something about I/O Assignments. Ive read it and do not have the slightest clue on what it does, nor do i understand it. Everything is set on factory defalt.

Can someone out there help me out?

Here is the link to the owners manual if it helps!

Thanks in advance!

Send the video directly to the TV and the audio directly to the receiver. Don't have the receiver involved with the video. Keep it simple. Merry Christmas.

Thanks Nick...

Although all the inputs on the TV are already occupied.

Look at page 14 of the online owner's manual under the lightbulb symbol. Signals are output the same way they are input. Therefore if you make a composite connection in, you will need a composite connection out. Your ps2 is working because you have an s-video connection going in and an s-video connection going out.

Hook up a composite video connection from the monitor out on the receiver to an input on your TV and the video will work. I don't think that you will need to disconnect the s-video monitor output connection when you do this, but if you don't get a signal doing what I said then try disconnecting the s-video cable. Let us know what happens.

Thanks for the clarification! It works great! I guess I must of misunderstood it when it said the S-Vid overrides other connections.

Thanks again for all your help!!

Merry Christmas!
