new receiver before a sub?

it's remediation time for a sub-newbie. I want to add a sub to my aged stereo system, but don't have a sub-out on my receiver (center and surrounds only). can i connect it to the center channel and use the sub to crossover? or should i just bite the bullet and buy the new receiver at the same time? would love to take this one bite at a time.

while i'm at it, what about the Hsu stf-2 to match my 10yo 2-way altec lansing bookshelfs? other ideas? i'd like to avoid spending more than $400.

Cheers

Well, the Hsu stf-2 does have L/R speaker level input/outputs, so there is no requirement to replace the receiver to use that sub.

do i just use the surrounds? my "b"s are already in use.

Not necessary. Run your front speaker cables right into the sub, then use the sub's speaker output to your fronts. The sub takes the signal right from the amplified speaker line, then passes it right to the speakers.

If you did use your surround channels to feed the sub you wouldn't get much sound if any from the sub.:D

so here's a followup question...

I've got an old Sony receiver (30 or 35WPC I think) as well as a very old Marantz (2238B?). Which will sound better with the Sub? I can always give both a shot, but if there's consensus here, i can avoid the headache. Newer HT receiver next on the list anyway.

Note that the sub's x-over does not affect the frequencies being sent to the speaker(s) connected to the speaker level outputs. The good news is, the HSUs use a 80Hz x-over.

I would definitelty use the Marantz.

Marantz baby, those oldies are goldies. They are very solid performers, assuming they are well kept.:)

For 5.1 movies, there will be no substitute for a new receiver. The difference in the output when you select 5.1 on the dvd is astounding. If you don't have a 5.1 receiver, it's not gonna be the same. Trust me!;)

For any of you that don't agree, try this. Pop in a dvd, and don't select 5.1 on the player. Select pro-logic, or PLII on the receiver. Then, while the movie is playing, change the audio (on the player) to 5.1. HUGE difference.

Best deal around at the moment.
