Suggestions Paradigm and Marantz System...Opinions Please

I'm new to Home Theater and this is going to be my first step up from a home theater in a box system...dont know how I ever thought that sony system was quality sound... Anyways there aren't very many audiophile shops in the St. Louis area so my choices are a bit limited for auditioning. The system I am thinking about purchasing is as follows.

Reviever:
Marantz 7400 or 8400 (I have seen some fairly good deals with these being last years models)

Speakers:
Paradigm Monitor 7's for the Fronts
Paradigm CC370 for the center
Paradigm Adp 170s for the rears

I'm in college so this setup is a pretty big purchase for me and I do not want to buy anything that I won't be happy with. I've heard the Paradigm system and thought it was amazing (remeber that I'm new to home theater and all I've known is a sony HTIB). One thing im concerned about is the price, the store quoted me a price of $750 dollars for a pair of Monitor 7's and after reading alot about them that seams pretty pricey from what others have paid, so I'm curious what others have paid for a system like this. I think I'm going to go with an SVS sub to round out the package because from what I've read they are a pretty good bang for the buck (which is what I'm going for here). So any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You would not be at all dissapointed with that setup. Movies and music would be awesome. I have the Marantz 8400 and I love it, great clean sound and it would power those Paradigms nicely. There are a bunch up on UBID.com for $649 right now. The 8400 doesn't have all the bells and whistles of several competing receivers, instead it focuses on ease of use and functionality. I don't use many DSP modes, and auto setup for the speakers isn't a big deal for me. An additional component input might be a feature some would want but my TV only goes up to S-Video so again no worries for me at the moment.

If you went with your posted setup I think you'd be more than happy. Just email the people at SVS with you room dimensions and they'll suggest a sub. I've heard those Paradigms and was impressed. I own the Marantz and I'm impressed. I can't imagine they'd make a bad pairing, and once you throw in a nice beefy SVS sub, you'll have a killer combo that I'll bet stays with you till it's time to hand it down to the kids.

On a side note $750 does seem a little steep for the Paradigms, but not out of line or anything. Check and see if the store will do better and also call some other Paradigm dealers to get them to price it out for you on the phone so you know where you stand. If you are buying all 5 speakers at once I'm sure you'll get a deal. Tell all the shops you call that you plan to make a whole speaker set purchase and they'll treat you right.

I have a similar pairing: SR5400 with Studio 20s (soon to add a CC-470 and Mini Monitors for center & surrounds). It's a very good combination. I hear you on the Sony thing, this combo blows Sony sound away, no comparison.

I'm with takeereasy on the functionality; Marantz concentrates on the meaningful features in audio rather than getting distracted with too many extra bells and whistles --why pay for 50 ways to color your sound when you send so much time & money to get sepakers that DON'T color the sound?

I think you'll be happy with the combo. FYI, the Studio 20's are only $50 more than the Monitor 7's & since you're getting a sub anyway...

Yeah I did hear the studios, but since the price is a really big issue for me since im still in college, once i bought the studio 20's id have to purchase stands too. Also theres just something about the look of floor standers next to a big rptv thats a must. Oh and on another note, I am curious since Paradigm only magnetically shields speakers in the black color, How far away do speakers need to be from a RPTV if they arent magnetically shielded, thought it was strange that they only offer shielded speakers in black, kinda defeats the purpose of offering then in like 4 different finishes.

thanks for the opinions so far guys keep em coming please

If I purchased it from Ubid.com does it still come with the manufacturers warranty, that would be my only hesitation. I know if I order from accessories4less.com I still get the original warranty, any know?

Yes it would. Marantz offers a three year manufacturers warranty and UBID is an authorized dealer. No worries there.
