New No-Nonsense Cable Company

Following in the footsteps of Cobalt and River cable, Calabrine Cable is another retailer that uses quality Belden and Canare cables, makes 'em spiffy, and gives you a reasonable price without all the BS.

While I know nothing about the company, I like this quote:

At this time, we do not include "display boxes" with our cables. We have found that boxes do not affect the performance of the cable.

:)

Another good one is:

When designing a cable, we focus primarily on three scientific principles: inductance, capacitance, and resistance - LCR. To Calabrine, these are the most important terms when considering a cable. Companies that tell you otherwise have either discovered a loophole in the entire discipline of physics, or are taking advantage of flashy terminology to get your mouth watering.

Well said.

It's great that they talk of following scientific principles and don't seem to spout the usual nonsense that other cable companies have been accused of but what makes their cables worth the price? 3M speaker cables with locking bananas for $170 (on 'sale').

Compare that to 3M of average bulk speaker wire at .30/ft = $2.70. Add on expensive locking bananas from Monster for $20, we are at $22.70. Let's double+ that to include the manufacturer's cost and a large profit margin to arrive at ~$60.

Their cables are 3 times that much. Even allowing for the fact that their cables may measure slightly better, are they really worth 3 times as much or is it just another case of paying a giant markup for pretty audio jewelry?

I never said that they were a good deal. Cobalt Cable and River Cable are doing the same thing. No, I wouldn't buy them. But then again, some people might really like 'em. Also, I think those are WBT terminations, which are insanely expensive.

The speaker cable I saw was $16/ft for a 10 ft pair, I guess that would be $8/ft. I cannot fault them on appearance but the price is not what I would call reasonable

The cables are worth it. Let me tell you why. Quality is there, the terminations are done for you with expensive wbt bananas. $20.00 a pop, for the locking ones. And all those that have visable speaker cable in the living room, as I do running to my main speakers; the mesh covering adds appeal. So if you value your time as I do, why not pay for the great servive of cutting, terminating with the proper run length. What a great product at a reasonable price. I will take two pair 4m runs of the speaker cable. Hope calabrine is reading this.

Although there is nothing wrong with making a buck in a free economy, you really don't need to pay more than $.35 cents a foot for top quality 12/2 speaker cable from Home Depot. Tinning the ends or using $1/pair banana plugs would make them easier to deal with as well as avoid slight corrosion. (I can provide a site you can buy banana plugs in bulk for rediculously low prices if you wish.) You won't notice any difference in sound unless you are running over 50 feet (some would argue 100 feet), then I'd recommend 10/2 wire for $.60 cents a foot. IMO, I don't think any exposed cable looks appealing. If it must be exposed, and you have the cash and want something pretty, then go with these calabrines. Just realize there is absolutely no sonic benefit.

I don't know why people are still messing with exotic cables and home depot zip cord when they could all have the Audioholics GLOB. Now this is the cable of the future!

Just curious if anyone actually thought the GLOB was a true product? I'm guessing you could easily fool the right personality.

When we announced the GLOB at CES, we got flooded with emails with people interested in buying the product, and some companies in china were interested in distributing the product. We even got hate mail from people thinking we sold out and were now spouting psuedo science. Boy did they feel stupid when we had to explain to them it was all a joke ;) Or is it?

You know the old saying "there's a sucker born every minute" which can be expanded upon to "there's a sucker born every minute and 10 exotic cable salesman ready to take their order" :)

I'm not completely convinced they are true WBTs. I got a set of locking bananas that looks very much like those for a whole lot less.

Not to downplay these guys, but I managed to take some bluejeans cables, techflex, and shrink tube and ended up with cables that look very nearly exactly like those...at a total outlay of far less. All it took was a little time to assemble.

They do look to make a quality cable & don't smear snake oil all over it.

I definitely agree. If I were in the market for some cables and I wanted the spiffy look, I'd do the same as you and make them myself. Of course, those of us with cash to burn (Yes, that's you Sleestack) would rather just order a pretty cable than take the time to assemble it themselves. Not to rip on anyone, but some people just feel that their time is better spent not terminating and techflexing cables.

Gotta pay the people building them. Business have greater expenses than some jabronie building cables in his basement.
