Wow, thats Rick Rubin for ya. I am sure he had no control over the mastering for the game ......Which is a Good thing..... most likely why it sounds better...

It's far from the first time. I've often heard better mastering of a piece in a game or movie (admittedly, more often of a classical or "oldie") than I did on the CD.

Makes me want to go buy Ghostbusters II to see if my recollection of "Love Keeps Lifting Me" is accurate.

I am not the only one who heard this horrible piece of mastering. It is really sad because listening to the Black Album and ...And Justice for All are dynamic treats.

You can hear hard clipping on the new album. Truly pathetic from a band that claims it is all about the music.

Atleast Metallica and Rick Rubin have something in common. They are both big piles of poo. Annunaki, pathetic is the perfect word to describe what Metallica has become.

Long time since.

Metallica hasn't been "all about the music" since Master of Puppets. Up to that point they had never even made a video. And when you factor in how anal they were about Napster pretty much did it for me. I have listened to the new album and while it is better than St. Anger that still isn't saying anything. I am once again truly disappointed in Metallica. They have completely lost touch with their roots.

Wow that is horrible. I thought about buying this album too, but clearly that won't be happening now.

The Black Album on DVD Audio is possibly my favorite release on that format.

Death Magnetic sound compression

"According to mastering engineer Ian Shepherd, Metallica's new Death Magnetic album has a serious sonic problem: it has been compressed (in the audio sense of the word, not the file size sense) just about as much as it's possible to compress audio."

But, as it turns out, the same tracks as released for Guitar Hero haven't been compressed badly.

This is a good example of the difference extreme compression can make on a modern album.

I've been more impressed with the sound of video games the last few years than I have movie and music mixes. Metal Gear Solid, Bioshock, Call of Duty on PS3...

The GH III version of the album has now been ripped and encoded in FLAC on the torrent sites. It's funny how Metallica is all anti-piracy yet it's their fault why this album is going to get pirated a lot.
