Hello,

I would like to join this group due to my interest in home theater.

I have owned stereo systems since the 70s. Yes I'm old but still love audio equipment.

My recent interest in home theater is because I frequently am going through receivers. Here in FL we get power surges they seem to defeat surge protectors. I have lost some good ones I forgot to unplug. In order to have a music receiver I had to buy a surround sound receivers. I quit buying new when I lost my new Sony top tier receiver. It is fun searching for working used ones. I have best luck at estate sales.

Two weeks ago I bought a new tv and the installer hooked up the JVC rx-8000 I'm listening to. My living room has speakers for 5.1. It is pretty cool. This sparked an interest to build on this.

I know very little about home theater. Can someone, please recommend a good book I can read.

Still have my JVC-RX8000 in in the original box, however the left channel is blown. I don't ditch equipment.

Welcome! I use APC H15 power conditioners. I don't subscribe to 'clean power' marketing gimmicks, but they use an active relay to modulate how much voltage is being passed to all connected equipment. It basically acts as a secondary circuit breaker when it detects under/over voltage and immediately trips when there is an issue.

Home theater is as much a science as it is marketing ploys, and everyone has an opinion! This site is great as we are pretty quick to run off people trying to sell 'snake oil' solutions. I would start with reading the articles in the AV Research tab. Lots of information to absorb!

I have been using the APC H15 as well for over 15 years. I would recommend it to anyone who is exposed to voltage irregularities. It's definitely a dependable product.

Welcome to the audio zoo. HT is a popular topic here. Before going out and investing in a book, take a few moments and search on the HT threads. Search terms like 5.1, 7.1 etc should give you some interesting reading material. People get together and solve read world problems on the forums so the advice can be pretty specific. Gene does some videos that cover the basics I believe.

Welcome and have some fun. If you don't have a thin skin, its a great place to hang out and talk audio

There are a lot of helpful articles in the AV Research tab at the top of the screen. There's a lot of us OFs around here, welcome :)

ps may not help if you're close enough to major issues, but do you have whole home surge protection?

If you really wanted something to read, there are the Harley books. I don't really recommend them, but I am a reader, myself and checked them out.
Nothing there you can't learn from the forums, especially with a little humility.
But if you just want a book, I would recommend the Introductory Guide...
And then be prepared to not pay attention to half of it. At least. ;)

No, just no to Harley. Do not spread bs like that around, it just festers.

Then Toole's book? I mean if you want to read a whole book, definitely better quality info. :)

I got the feeling OP was asking more about a book on setting up gear rather than diving into acoustics... ;)
I would recommend the Master Hanbook On Acoustics first, then Toole... either way...
Yes, much better information on those topics.

Still, lots easier to read setup articles here on AH I think, and takes a lot less time to get to the heart of things.....

Is there a minimum number of posts needed to setup a signature? I dont see any signature options under preferences. #Admin need to grant privilege's?

Dunno about minimum post count for a sig, but if you click your icon up at the top of the page for your account, it shows up along with preferences, account details, password and security, etc.

Yeah not sure about post count for signature, does affect ability to post links for a while, tho.

Like many of you I am a member of several forums. That makes it hard for me to remember which forum has which rules for what. Some forums make you pay (as in $) for the privilege of having extra storage, posting pics, and custom features like signature blocks. I don't think the AH makes you jump over a hurdle. I just lost interest in that stuff and am content with having an avatar and a place to hang out.

AH does not make you pay for that.

There's even threads here to increase your post count if you want to shortcut....but never heard of paid features like that here. Maybe Gene's consultation....

Funny, I've had the pleasure of being in Roberts company twice over the past 20 years and he was an entertaining fellow to talk too. Truth be told we spent more time conversing about motorcycles, a real passion of his.
