New Member - System Pics

Hey all, just signed up a few days ago so I figured I'd post a few pics so people didn't think I was full of ****. My system consists of (at the moment)...

Signals:
HD cable box (rogers)
Playstation 3
Kenwood Turntable
Pioneer 25 disc CD-changer

Receiver:
Yamaha RX-V1500

Power:
Behringer A500 (x2) - running mains and subs (at the moment)
Denon POA-5200 running centres

Speakers:
Yamaha S115V - mains
Yamaha SW118 - subs (2)
Yamaha towers - centres (at the moment, not sure what model)
Yamaha S55 - surrounds
Yamaha S15e - extras, not sure where to use them yet
Old JVC 3 ways with 12" woofers - extras, not sure where to use them yet

Display:
InFocus IN72
72" DaLite pull down screen
*** I sold my projector and screen, looking at the InFocus X10 and DaLites ~90+" screens

Connectivity: I run component cables for all video signals, and optical cables for all audio sources except the turntable. Neutrik speakon connectors for the big Yamahas, and banana plugs for the rest...

FUTURE:
- I just moved all my stuff into storage while I buy a house, and once I move in I'm going to pre-wire the new place for my setup. I need a couple dedicated circuits to run the amps, and I will pre-wire all hook ups for behind the receiver.

- Going to run a zone 2 in the games room (probably use the S15e's here), eventually run a zone 3 in the shop/garage (probably use my yamaha towers here w/2 8" woofers in each, and I'll get a dedicated centre channel speaker for my main room)...

- The A500's are a little underpowering the S115V's and way underpowering the S118's. I'm going to run each A500 into each S115V (I've tested it at over 120 db 1m from the speaker with this setup), and I'm likely getting a Yamaha P7000s to run the SW118's.

Now for the pics, pardon the builders white walls, I was renting the house and they wouldn't let me paint.... they didn't like the fact that I mounted my projector to the ceiling! lol

Hey, that is a nice set-up! You'll have to let us know how things go with the new house and the updates that you mentioned. I look forward to seeing how your system turns out in the new place. The 90" screen will be a nice step up from the 72" (says the man with the 27" CRT ).

How do you like useing the Yamaha's for your mains. I am thinking of ordering some B-52 MX1515's to use as my mains. I can use my Crown CTS 600's for powering them but was not sure if it would just be overkill. Also how about the sound at lower volumes?

I'm not familiar with those B-52's (but it sounds like they've got at least 1 15") or the crown, but I can at least comment on my thoughts on my setup.

I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the S115Vs as mains. When I bought them I was expecting them to sound great at high volumes, where other speakers would have been long past blown to ****... but I was expecting a bit of a harsh sound at lower volume levels. After owning them for several years I can't think of why I was expecting that, because they're not harsh at all (to my ears).

Here's a copy of the frequency response (from the yamaha manual):

I haven't looked at many other charts to see what other speakers are doing, so maybe somebody could interpret this for me?

I think they do a good job of accurately reproducing a wide range of frequencies at a wide range of volumes. I use them for everything from watching TV, to playing videogames (Call of Duty 4 will make you jump the sounds are so good), to watching movies (there's a scene in Tranformers where one of the good guys flys upside down over the head of a woman in the street, the bass is excellent), to listening to records in stereo through the mains only.

Listening to "take the long way home" by supertramp on vinyl through the mains only makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck...

Sounds great, The B52's are dual 15's and a 1'' compression horn and I think they will work well. Thanks for the info........

Yeah I'm not sure if the compression horn handles frequencies lower than a typical 1" speaker would, but I don't notice the lack of a mid-range on the speaker. And the graph certainly doesn't seem to have a dip in the mid-range area.

I actually find with this style of speaker, the ports aren't tuned the same as a typical house speaker is, and the woofer ends up not sounding as boomy/bassy as I expected.

Keep me in the loop, I'd like to hear what you think of the B52s... how much power are you going to throw at them?

I'm in North Carolina. It's a fixed-frame screen.

I am useing Crown CTS600's which are 300w per channel and the B52's are 600w speakers so they should work fine. I have a couple of Polk rt25's that I am thinking of running with them so if they lack midrange they should help. i will run the polks bi-amped off my reciever.
