New Home theater room

Hello I am very new to this, kinda. I have an out of the box home theater system from Onkyo that is about six years old. That is upstairs in the family room, and that is were it is going to stay. I am not real happy with it. Any way my question is. We built a new house. I ran all the wires for the upstairs system myself. I am in the process of finishing my basement right know. I ran speaker wires for 7.1 surround. The thing is I have no equipment for this new room. My wife has a tight grib on the pocket book, so I need "alot of bang for the buck". I would really like a plasma tv but will probably go with a 62" CRT rear projection(again pocket book). I would like to know your thoughts on what speakers to use. The only thing that will be in the wall/ceiling is the two back speakers, which will be in the ceiling(I hand no other place for this). I will have all my equipment in another room hopefully if you can help me out with this. So what are your suggestions on speakers amps DVD/CD/VCR etc. All the fixin's. Thanks in advance for your help.

I see this is your first post and we are happy to have you.

Could you be more specific in your request for assistance so that your needs may be addressed:

Room measurements (you mention that equipment will be in another room... can you tell us something more about this and why?)

Room particulars: materials for floor, walls and ceilings?

Your planned listening: % music, % HT and % HDTV programs?

Your budget?

My room is 15X20. Not sure on floor yet either carpet or hardwood? The room were the componets will go is directly behind the wall that the tv will be on. Reason being my wife is weird about being able to see everything. She even wants to get a unit to shut the doors on the TV. I had to put my foot down on that. HDTV, Movies, and Music all about the same. I have three kids. So they might even plat there playstation on it. Not sure on budget, I will probably get things a little at a time.

Room setup.

For audio, carpet would be desirable. Wood floors, bare walls, and other hightly reflective surfaces require rugs, furniture, or other room treatments to "tame" the room.

You have a good sized room so floorstanding mains would be best. You might be able to get away with a nice bookshelf system for moderate listening levels. You'll also need a good 12" subwoofer, SVS and HSU are recommended.

Also, your receiver will need plenty of ventalition when in use. Plan on leaving the cabinet open when listening or installing small fans to circulate the air and keep things cool.

In the bang-for-the-buck category - you may want to take a look at front projection. A projector can be had for about $2,000 and you can make a top notch screen for under $200.00 to go with it.

That's about twice the size of a $4,000 plasma for half the price and is a true, full HD setup. Hard to beat for the cash.

A budget really is what you need to get behind somehow. $5,000? $1,000? $7,000? There is a huge difference between those numbers and a general working budget or a total max budget will really help with recommendations.

I would like to stay between $5,000 to $7,000. I am planning on carpet know and a wrap around leather coach. I do now that I will have two tactile transducers mounted to the bottom of the coach. A little added bonus for my guests!!

are you going with the crowontech tes-100 tactile transducers?

after doin a bunch of research i bought a pair. They are much more accurate and realistic than a buttkicker or anything else ive tested. Definately would recommend them, only thing is that i think id buy a different amp than the crowson one. check them out at www.crowsontech.com

as for front projection, id only get that if you have a dedicated ht room that you can keep dark.

for speakers, axiom makes new in walls that are half in half out.. supposedly pretty decent sounding. if you go all axiom you can get the m60's or 80's, vp150, qs8's, and the in walls. for around.. 2500

then an SVS plus, plus/2, or ultra. or an axiom ep500.
thats all pretty good bang for the buck. and internet direct.

for receivers, you can get a denon 3805 for around 700 bucks now. the yamaha 2600, and denon 3805 are good choices too. but its over budget, unless you just buy a little at a time.

in a box systems are not very good usually.. you can get good bang for your buck. but only if youre looking to buy a complete system for around 700 bucks.

if you have even 1-2 grand to spend on the audio portion of your ht, then you should get a real system.

Well I think I found my Television. My wife is getting me a 65" Hitachi CRT for Christmas. I don't think I will complain
