I have just about completed my Home Theater. I need help deciding if I need to buy a stand alone receiver or do I need to purchase an amp also. I have a BenQ W10000 projector and B&W 700 Series speakers( 2 front, center, sub, 2 side surround, 2 rear). My room size is 15'wide x 38'long. It is a dedicated Home Theater Room and I primarily watch HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies. Budget for receiver/amp is about $ 4,000.00. Thanks for the help!

With a budget of $4k, I would go with separates without question. I saw a Bryston 7-channel amp not too long ago at a local retailer for about $2.5k. If I had $2.5k to spare, I would have bought it.

shatter, welcome to the forum!

You could always get a receiver by itself to start with, and then decide if you want more power. From what I can tell, there are some quite nice receivers out there for under $2K (Onkyo 875 comes to mind). There are also some nice 200W/channel amps out there for around $2K (Emotiva MPS-1, Outlaw 7700, I'm sure others). That Onkyo, or something equivalent, may make you happy enough that you can save the extra cash. Also, you can always try out a separate amp and return it if you don't like it.

That is a long room. Where or rather how far do you sit from the screen and front speakers?
Do you have the speaker sensitivity and impedance?

And, since you are set on high def DVDs, you need to look for a receiver that can take advantage of the new audio soundtracks on these DVDs.

are you running 703, 704 and or 705 with a HTM7? This would be good to know.

Integra DTC-9.8

And you could get the matching amplifier, but I think you could do better getting the Emotiva MPS-1 when it becomes available (it is quite popular and sells out frequently). The Emotiva has a higher power rating, and weighs almost three times as much as the Integra, and probably costs less.;) I don't think many will argue the Emotiva MPS-1 will trounce the Integra DTA-9.4 amplifier.:)

Edit: The Integra DTA-9.4 weighs about 39 pounds and the Emotiva MPS-1 is 115 pounds.

With that kind of budget I would also go for separates. To give you other options besides Emotiva, you can check out pre/pro & amplifiers from

Outlaw Audio, Rotel, Parasound, B&K, Sunfire, Nad & Adcom.

Since you like HT I would get a pre/pro that had all the bells & whistles that you wanted it to have & get at least a 200wpc 7 channel amp & be done with it.

That would be a seriously rocking system!:D
