So I am embarking on the extensive task of finishing my basement. I don't have exact measurements, but the room is roughly 35x25 with 10 foot ceilings. My "theatre" will consume approx. half of this space. I just purchased a Yamaha Aventage RX-A850 and I'm in the market for speakers now. I'm partial to Polks right now and I'm ready to pull the trigger. Right now Crutchfield has a deal, spend $499 on polk, get $299 off selected subs. So if I split my order and work some magic I could, in theory, get 2 subs at discount.

This is what I'm thinking
-Pair of TSx440T floorstanding
-Pair of TSx110B bookshelves
-One TSx150C center channel
Plus
-One DSW PRO 440with
-One PSW111

Someone please tell me this is a good idea so I can go ahead and order these bad boy. Thanks.

Hi!

-Rotate your whole setup 90 degrees, so the display is on a short wall. The interaction of room boundaries is very important! Do NOT absorb the first reflection points! Your room is NOT a recording studio! This will make your front sound stage sound vastly superior in terms of spaciousness and listener envelopment, and will make integration of ceiling mounted (not to be confused with IN-ceiling) surround speakers much less of a distraction for the pool players behind you.

-The best speaker in the world is only as good as the room/arrangement it is asked to perform in!

-Please provide a precise budget for speakers/subs. You've got a beautiful space to full with great sound. And Polk Audio is not going to deliver the HT experience you seek. Dollar for dollar, there are many great options out there that will trounce brick and mortar favorites like Polk and Klipsch.

-HT Subwoofers by nature are expensive. A good one requires a sturdy box, a big magnet, and an amp. I can promise you that no $400 sub is going to adequately pressurize your large space and give you the desired experience.

-What is the floor to be covered with?

-If you came to a site called Audioholics, you acknowledge we try to achieve the best possible sound in ANY configuration. Before you get your hopes up with some ridiculous 11 channel system(not that you have), realize that your overall experience may be better by starting with a high quality 2 ch system, and then adding to it as budget allows! (You've already got the receiver!) Quality sound is an investment that if acquired by an educated mind, can be enjoyed for decades! Don't let the marketing departments convince you otherwise!

What Warrior said. Polk subs are the bottom feeders of the subwoofer world. An 8-inch sub probably won’t dig any deeper than the 440T’s will.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the room cannot be rearranged as there is 3 support posts down the middle of the room which we plan on integrating into a knee wall. My budget for speakers is around 1k. I know it's not a lot of money to some of you guys but really I'm lucky to be getting a home audio system at all. I can probably go a little higher but not by much. The reason I was sold on polk was because I'd actually heard some and liked them. I will be using this for movies and music hopefully. The floor will most likely be carpet on the theater side and some sort of laminate on the side with the pool table. I assumed I would place my bookshelves on the knee wall behind the couch. These are all things I need figure out before moving forward on the project so I can plumb and route my speaker wire and connections.

Then EMP Tek is a brand I urge you to check out! I'd be willing to bet a pair of R55Ti towers will play lower than even those subs you're considering! Its the ID variant of RBH Sound which make some of the best speakers on the planet.

Even a pair of Dennis Murphy's Affordable Accuracy's would likely provide more meaningful bass response (especially in that large of a space) than a Polk tower. (I don't know of any speakers under $500 that sound better than these!)

Don't worry, this isn't a dis on your tastes in speakers. You liked what you heard, and what you soon will learn, is that you only heard a part of the story, and with better drivers, you'll hear the rest of the recording!

So are the affordable accuracy also front speakers? I like what I see on the empteks, what about bookshelves, sub, and center channel?

I think EMP sells their products in a series, so just buy matching series
