New Home Speaker Setup

Hi all,
I'm truly new to the audio world. I know my video pretty well but when it comes to audio I'm lost at sea. I understand how to connect, and ports, and cables but...

How much boom to the room? -- Clueless.
What satellites are good? -- Not an Idea?
Which brand is bang for buck vs buck for show -- *lets the air our of his head*

My specifications are as follows:
$800 - $1000max

I would need: 5 Satellites, 1 Sub, Preferably a receiver too.
I know I must hang my head in shame asking Audiophyles like yourselves for help with such a terrible budget but I just bought my first house and I'm looking at a bare wall, bare pocketbook, and my nine year old Klipsch's just died :(

My room size is about 15.5' x 15.5', with a fireplace protruding on the right wall by about 2 feet. It is centered to the room, so I don't think it should be an issue.

I humbly bow to anyone who replies, or reads this thread,
Many thanks to all,
G

John72953,

Thanks for the reply. I checked out the speaker set that you pointed me to. They were indeed nice but I'm hesitant on getting this set. Perhaps I'm skewed to purchasing things separately but I figured that I may be able to pull a bit more with the money.

I'm in a bit of an unusual situation because I am looking at open box - B market and really lightly / great condition used equipment as well. At the same time I am looking to really stretch the dollar and get some more kick from the system.

It was mentioned to me that it may be better to go for 3.1 for the price point I'm ranging at and then go for 5.1+ afterward. I may end up doing that. Would you know what a mid-range set, or rather something a bit more than entry level would set me back? Would you have any tips on manufacturers? Who not and who to go with?

I had been looking at the DT MFW-15 (600), (3xFront Speakers @ 100/c) but the DT MFW is too expensive at the moment for me. I can't handle spending 600 on a sub alone. If it was less -- perhaps. Also if the company wasn't hit with so much bad press and bad reviews perhaps as well. That sub isn't worth the pricepoint from what I am reading (More buck for the bang).

It's a shame there isn't a range of manufacturers that just are... like cars... I can't get a Lexus but hell I can afford a ford (it's an example -- no flaming the manufacturers :p).

I'm going to keep looking, but I'd like to thank you for the suggestion, time and kindness. Honestly it's all appreciated.

Well I haven't built anything and the room is a creme color. I was thinking black but I could bend IMHO I wasn't really looking into it as I plan on making the Entertainment center fixtures.

I figure by making it myself I can save a couple bucks :p

Thanks for the reply,

Hi AvRat,

Thanks for the reply. I noticed in another thread you suggested:
PB12-NSD

Comparing the two which would be your choice?
I understand they are both out of my range but I guess if I go 3.1 and forget the back two speakers they become closer to being within range. Ugh... I know I am going to end up spending more, I can't say no to shiney new toys... :D

The Outlaw LFM-1 Plus and SVS PB12-NSD are comparable, but with the sale price it should be a no brainer!

For your receiver, look at the Onkyo 607.

Saturday Audio Exchange has some good deals for PSBs. An Image B25/C60 combo would nice for the front three @ $600. http://www.saturdayaudio.com/

Wow, your requirements are right on target with mine. Perhaps I should wait until I earn another 400-600 to make it up to 1500. I was looking to keep it at 1000 as well. I did start a thread in the Audiophytes forum but I may just leech some of the good information here.

From a lurker, thanks all and thanks: kuko92

Edit:
AVRat, what do you think of BASH? I had a bash sub (Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 Ultra's for my PC) and supposedly (my set is slowly dying) the BASH chip is prone to failure how is their other stuff?
(I don't mean to threadsteal I am just looking to supplement why you chose to suggest the SVS PB10-NSD)
Nothing wrong with BASH gear, otherwise so many manufacturers wouldn’t be using them. I recommended the SVS PB10-NSD because of room size and budget.

Hi AVRat,

Sorry for the delay in response. I've been working on the room. I have read about the sub and it looks downright great but I do wonder would this sub damage a "pergo" like floor? What I mean by damage is more along the lines would it decouple the floorboards?

The only reason I ask is because it's downwards firing. Most subs I looked at were forward firing and I just noticed that.

Thanks AVRat, jinjuku, john72953 for helping out in my decision making process. At first with all the choices the numbers and budget it's rather difficult to come to a decision with all the speakers in the price range.
