Hello all!

New guy with the same old question.

Set up
Room size: 20x20 It opens up to the kitchen and the hall way.
TV: sammy 5271
Receiver: Pioneer VSX-33TX
FR and FL: Primus 360
center:primus 250
Sl and SR: mirage nanostat
sub: That's were I need your help!

I'am remolding my kitchen so Iam on a tight budget. I just picked up the TV and the surround sound speakers. The receiver is about 7 years old. The primus speakers about 4 years old. The whole system could be alot better, thats why Iam hoping I can get awy with using a budget sub under $300. From what I've read the SVS is the only way to go, but one would cost me way more than my better half will let me spend right now. Plus I feel if I if I spend more than $300 might as well rebuild the whole system with top notch equipment. I just need something to get me by for now. I never had a sub so I think any would be better than none right now. Who knows how much my wife will want to spend on the remodel. Here are the subs I was looking at

BIC H-100
AV123 X-sub
some of your ideas

Should I go with one of these, (which one) or save my lunch money for the SVS. Or should I save and rebuild the whole system (new receiver and speakers)?

Thanks for all the help in advance.

IMO save your money for a better sub. there is nothing wrong with the rest of your system even if you go for a more expensive subwoofer.

Well if you have to go with one I would say go for the BIC since people seem to love them in a little bigger room. If the room is a little smaller I'd say the x-sub.

Overall I have to say I agree with Mike and say wait and save some more money and get a bigger sub. The MFW-15 from av123 will ship in a couple of months if you order one now and is supposed to be a great sub, also the x-plosive will hopefully be done soon and should be a nice sub for $400. Take your time, don't rush into anything and even look used. If you've never had a sub then don't rush and get something OK when you can take some time and get something Great.

I have the BIC and I love it. It can get loud and go low. But I bought it knowing I would upgrade in the future and then will use the BIC for bedroom duty. So if your planning on buying one and sticking with it I would say try to save up a couple hundred more and you'll have one hell of a subwoofer.

For only $130 more you could get one of these:

SVS PB10-NSD

It's a good sub that would do you more than just "getting by" for the time being, then you can upgrade later on to either dual subs or a bigger one if your appetite demands it. :D

I say wait and get a good sub the first time. When you get a good one, you buy it once and keep it for a long time. It will work with any speakers or receiver you get later. It's relatively simple and new technology or features don't outmode them. It performs a simple function and either it fulfills that function or it doesn't. If you get an underwhelming sub, you will want to replace it later at greater expense anyway.

When I got into this hobby seriously, the killer sub was the first thing I bought. I put a $1400 sub into a $400 system knowing that I was going to upgrade the other components to similar quality over time. In my mind, the sub sets the tone (so to speak) for the whole system. It's the beating heart of the system. Don't cheap out here. Shop smart. Shop S-Mart.

Halon, now you sound like a salesman.....for another $50, i throw in this free dvd player.:D

I'd say save a bit more money for later. Your setup is good enough for now. See how much you/wifey spend on the kitchen, hopefully you can get a couple hundred bucks more into the sub.

LOL - yeah, just throwing at least one relatively inexpensive option out there. I'm usually in the camp that says save up for a great sub initially, but I've realized that not everyone needs or desires that kind of power from their system. I learned my lesson the hard way for sure - I bought cheapo subs from the beginning and ended up costing me much more money in the end. ;)

To the OP: If you choose to save up, you would not be disappointed by any means with a good SVS or Hsu model.
