New Genesis concert dvd out - excellent

Genesis put out a 3 set dvd of there tour from last year. It's obvious that I'm a fan, but I would say if it were not worth the $20 I paid. Well, that's not the case. I think they did an excellent job bringing it to the market place. There is the full concert plus extras on 2 discs, and an extra disc with behind the scenes documentary kind of stuff. The film quality looks very good. It was filmed in HD but there is no word of it being released that way. Anyway, the most important part to me is the sound. I think this may be a excellent reference dvd. The mix is in DTS 5.1 surround, and I think they made excellent use of all of the speakers, and I'm especially pleased about the bass track, as well as when they step on the bass pedals, you very quickly know it.

I am not however pleased that I had to buy this at Walmart because it's exclusively sold at their stores. I guess they purchased 100,000 copies and that was good enough for EMI to strike a deal. I'll leave the rest of my opinion out since it really isn't relevant.

Has anyone else picked this up? Perhaps not to many people know about it as advertising seems to be pathetic, and it's only available at Walmart.

As far as the show is concerned, as usual, Genesis are technically brilliant, and sound very good. Phil Collins voice I think is amazing for his age. The setlist is excellent and covers a good 35 years of there music.

I was disappointed with the sound on 'The Way We Walk' dvd; Invisible Touch Tour dvd was much much better, and this new one smokes them both. Great job to the man that mixed it.

Oh, and this was filmed in front a small crowd in Rome of aprox. 500,000 people!

I will check it out. I hope that there is a lot of emphasis on their classic material, which I like vastly better than the newer stuff. (I have always wanted a concert performance of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in its entirety.)

Pretty much all Genesis fans want a full Lamb performance, but it doesn't exist. You may have to check out cover band The Musical Box, as they've recreated The Lamb shows with incredible authenticity.

I do want to pick up this When In Rome DVD, but as I hate double-dipping, I'll likely wait for the Blu-ray. (Not that I even have a BD player yet, but I will. Oh yes. I will.) Unless I find a copy at a ridiculously great price, that's the plan. And the BD will come. Genesis has always embraced the newest technologies. For their '86 Wembley shows, they used HD cameras to record it, even though it was released on VHS. That's how much quality means to them. So I have no doubt that a Blu-ray version of the Rome show will happen. Sooner rather than later, I hope.

Around theatres across the world, there were screenings of the new DVD, but all we got was six or seven songs, and two hours of documentary footage. Much of the doc stuff was amazing, fasinating, funny stuff. Well worth watching.

cheers,

I'm not holding my breath for the blu-ray release. In fact I still don't even own a Blu Ray Player

I am picking up this DVD this weekend. $20 is a steal for what it is and I am excited. I have the double disc CD release of this tour and its great!

Sadly this is likely the last time the band will ever be together. I don't think a reunion with Peter will ever happen. We are seeing an end to an era of great musicians and music whether it be: Genesis, Yes, Steely Dan, etc, this type of music will never come again IMO.

If they're going to split the concert over two discs, it's probably as high a bitrate as they could get. That's considering that there's a stereo, DD5.1 and a DTS 5.1 on there. Just my guess, anyway.

Oh, perhaps that is the case. There is DTS 5.1 & DD 5.1 and the concert is split on 2 discs. Some great extras as well. I will have to look closely at it to see if I can confirm the high bit-rate deal.

If you're using a player which shows the bitrate it would tell you.
The PS3 for example will show "dts 768kbps" or "dts 1.5Mbps" depending on whether it's full bitrate or not.

Looking at the size of the dts track through DVD Shrink would be another way.

It's unusual to include both a 1.5 Mbps dts track and a DD 5.1 track though. That's why Reznor released two different versions of "...and all that could have been" - one with 1.5 Mbps dts and the other with DD 5.1 - also why most of the 40 movies on DVD with full dts only include a 2.0 DD track to fulfill mandatory DVD specs.

Ahh You lucky ducky! Daryl is great to talk to, a super nice guy. Enjoy your chat, and ask him if he is satisfied with the final tour they just had, or if he wants more?

Just a total aside, I know . . . Daryl's doing a performance and guitar clinic at a music store here in Toronto on Saturday!

Maybe I'll get a chance to ask my own questions, but if I don't, ask him how, way back in the late 70s, he first approached some of those classic Steve Hackett solos, "Firth of Fifth" in particular. Was he intimidated, did he see it as a challenge? Was he worried about how fans would respond to his interpretation? And how has that interpretation evolved over the years?

cheers,

Yes I can confirm that that is correct.
I just checked via my Denon AVP-A1HDCI pre/pro and it says 48kHz. How are you guys getting 96/24 and is it sustained?

Mike

Shouldn't it auto select 24/96? That is if it is available??

Aside from a few minor errors by the two of you (haha), what a great interview! ;)
Daryl is such a great interview, he always is a pleasure to listen to and so kick back.

What errors? I am interesting to know if I called out a song title wrong or something since I am familiar with all things Genesis

Oh dear i opened a can of worms!

Well, I'd have to listen again, but Daryl had mentioned they played Duke at the Rock honors.. and he said they opened with a instrumental etc (from memory here). They actually only played Turn it on Again, No son of Mine, drum duet - Los Endos.. so I think he must of meant Los Endos which is obviously not from Duke.
You had mentioned I think that you loved how they kicked off the show with Duke, when I know you meant Behind the Lines (which is on the Duke album, duke is not a song title)... then you got I think confused and mentioned how much you loved them mixing Cinema show with duke etc.. when actually Cinema show came in after and as part of the In the Cage Medley.
So, beginning of show is Behind the lines/dukes ends, and later the medley is In the Cage/Cinema show/Riding the scree (sped up some ala 3 sides live)/dukes travels/Afterglow.

Sorry to be nit picky.. but you asked!:D Oh, they way I see it is this: If I were to interview him... I would probably confuse so many things from shear excitement!

No big Gene, great interview!! Thanks for it.

Now Mike runs for cover....
