Guys;

What do you think about us starting a new forum section for Gaming?

I had a blast this weekend playing Halo2 via multiplayer with my best friend and I'd love to discuss this stuff in our forums with respect to:
cheats
playability
sound & video quality
compatibility between XBOX and 360, etc

Wadda ya think?

Hey man, cheats are big business now. EA thinks that you should pay for cheats instead of having those pesky free codes.

As for the topic at hand, I'm fully in support of it. The newer consoles (well, not the Wii) are becoming media powerhouses that should be at home in any home theater. But, on a note including the Wii, all of them can output their video by either component video or HDMI, meaning that they're capable of HD content. Add to that more and more games are utilizing surround sound to enhance immersion, and to me it's hard to find a reason to not have one in your HT. I also concur with Sheep that it should feature discussions of PCs as well, since any informed gamer knows that PCs are still the best for the absolute cutting edge in gaming technology (and skill, but that's a whole different argument).

I love PC gaming but having to upgrade just to play the latest and greatest games is not my cup of tea anymore.

I might get back into console gaming, still need to check out the 360 and the PS3.

I play whenever I have some free time. Mainly Xbox and PC. Would love to hear some stuff that relates more to the games and less about the which new console to buy. I probably won't buy a Xbox 360 or PS3 till later next year.

BTW- Sheep, cheat codes are GOOD! God mode is GOOD!

I suck in games that's why i don't play that often but i agree if we have a separate section for games enthusiasts. It's easier to navigate the site with everything in order of preference.

Gaming

I like gaming, but between already being a member of message boards, subscribing to 4 gaming magazines, web sites like gamespot.com, etc...

I have to say I don't feel a big need for more on gaming, and the question might be finding a niche.

If it's just 'audioholics members talk about games', then that's its own niche.

But it seems like Gene is looking for more or he wouldn't be asking the question.

Things like cheat codes already have reliable web resources, so a hit and miss message board is marginal for that.

The obvious angle is audio/video equipment and games.

For example, I use an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum and Klipsch Ultra 5.1's, and ponder gaming on a home theatre system.

Gaming sites have all kinds of threads about the differences between sound cards, the ideal speakers, and such.

Even threads on games that have the best sound effects might be of interest?

Similarly, there are all kinds of discussions on the best video equipment to use. Things like what monitor frequencies to set, LCD lag etc. are of interest.

One note - there is an issue of seperating platforms. It seems iffy when it's questionable whether there're enough people for a gaming forum, but making a PC gamer read through 80% threads on console topics creates a lot of noise, making the forum one to skip for some.

Don't look at it as just the members here either. This will undoubtly draw people to the forum as well.

EDIT: I just noticed the subwoofer forum. Man, that must've taken a while to filter.

It stands to reason that since next-gen gaming machines now have onboard sophisticated hardware (or software algorithms) dedicated to sound why not discuss the topic of sound design/theory in games in its own dedicated forum? There are many of us here who are not only avid HT enthusiasts but also gaming enthusiasts as well; many of us use our HT rigs for gaming (just not me, mine's dedicated nyah nyah :D ). Moreover, a gaming forum here at Audioholics gives some legitimacy to the argument that I've supported for years in that music in (certain) video games is as good or even eclipses a lot of the music you can buy in the store (especially formulaic pop star search american idol drivel) -- anyone who has played Halo (and its sequel), Half-Life (and its sequel), Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill, Max Payne, Fatal Frame, etc., knows just what I'm talking about. I've always felt a little awkward responding to gaming related threads found under the other headings -- didn't quite fit; my vote's yes.

I think a gaming forum would be nice. This is one of only a couple of forums I read and none of them invlove gaming.

I think that gaming has become a main part of many home theater systems, including mine (my 360 might be the most important part of my system).

I would like to see it tried out, but there is no question that gaming can be a contentious topic as fanboisms run deep. Since these forums have pretty much avoided the petty HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray issues that have plagued other sites and have avoided arguements in other areas where emotions run hot it would be a welcome addition to see how a gaming forum would do here.

Of course - there are something like 10 billion other gaming forums out there already that people are actively involved in, so I'm not sure how much discussion will go on here.

Still - would welcome it if it didn't turn into a us vs. them fest and the BMW levels stayed in line with the rest of these forums.
