Alright, we have an older surround sound system upstairs (and a newer one downstairs that works perfect.) The old receiver is a Pioneer VSX-463S, and we have a tape deck, VCR, amp (for sub) and a CD player hooked into it. We bought a new DVD player (Pioneer DV-285) and want to hook it up.
The receiver only has one available input option that has the audio and video (no S-Video or anything, this thing is old) and it's the "LD" input. Now, here is a quick overview of how things are hooked up.
Our cable comes into the VCR, then from the VCR to the TV. Video and Audio out connections from the VCR into the Receiver, and then there is a specific video output on the back of the receiver which is labed for output to a TV. Now, when we hooked up the DVD player's composite outputs into the composite inputs on the LD portion of the receiver, and tune the receiver to "LD" mode, we get audio and NO video.
If we run the DVD player's video into a spare spot on the back of the VCR, we get video, but it fades in and out constantly. (Copy protection?)
We looked through the manuals, thinking maybe you have to adjust the receiver to tell it to redirect video input from the VCR to the LD, but we think it is because it's getting the audio just fine... just the TV won't show the new video, it's still just getting the cable video.
Now, I checked hoping there would be a spare input on the TV that we could just run a line direct from the DVD player to the TV, but there is only the cable input, and a single video input (from the TV output on the receiver).
My only guess is that there is some kind of difference between the output signal from modern DVD players and older LD players? Because the receiver is so old, maybe it can't understand the signal coming from the DVD player and just ignores it? We also tried changing the input on the TV, but that didn't work either.
Currently, buying any more new equipment is just not in the budget. Any suggestions?
