New Denon AVR-2106 - signal distribution question

Greetings, this is my first post. I've searched several posts looking for the answer to my question so I hope I am not repeating a previous question! I just picked up a Denon AVR-2106 to replace my Sony STR-DE945 which gave up the ghost a few days ago - it is amazing how fast you need to act when the anchor of your HT goes out! Anyhow, on the Sony I had the Video2 outs plugged in to an RF modulator that allowed me to pipe the audio/video into another room for the kids, so quality was not the primary concern. I wired the new Denon the same way, but alas, no signal present on Video2 outputs. There is one wiring difference overall - I am using S-video and optical connections where I previously used composite connections for DVD and Satellite. The Video2 output remains composite.

Is it possible that because the inputs are no longer composite that the composite output does not pick up a signal? Or is there some place in the setup that I am missing? I guess I figured that the video outputs had to have a signal, otherwise one would not be able to record from them.

Thanks for any help!

Edward

If the Denon is like my Onkyo receiver, the videoX outputs will only output the same format signal as what came in, so s-video vs composite could very well be your problem.

That's what I kinda figured, even though the video conversion specs say that it supports Composite to S-Video to Composite, and Composite to S-Video to Component. I guess I assumed that this meant there would be some signal on video1 or video2 out. Does it hurt to also run the composite cables in addition to S-Video, Component and Optical cables? Would that produce the output on video1 or 2, or would the reciever get confused with all of the inputs?

Transcoding from composite to s-video only outputs the signal thru the 'monitor out' port. Likewise, for composite or s-video to component, the component signal is output by the component out port.

If you have multiple video inputs on the receiver and the dvd player is the type that outputs both composite and s-video at the same time, you could connect the composite to one video input and s-video to another. You would then use the input with s-video for normal watching and the other with composite video when you want the signal sent out to the RF modulator.

Or just keep it simple and use composite video from the dvd player to Video1 (or whichever one has inputs only) on the receiver and composite from the Video2 out to the RF Modulator. Then use s-video (from Monitor out) or component (from the component out) to the TV and the receiver should be able to transcode from composite to s-video or component for the TV.

I gave you suggestion a try and I got a picture but no sound. I fixed the problem another way... I returned the 2106 and bought the 3806 which does a better job of signal conversion. Everything works great now, except that the 3806 generates a LOT of heat! My wife is gonna kill me, but the Ducks Unlimited armiore has got to go... of course, this also opens up my HDTV options to a display larger than 40"
