While they aren't always the easiest reads, have you had any luck with the manual? I have heard several folks that aren't very well accustomed to some of the more intricate settings of the newer Denon receivers having some difficulty.

In a quick once over of the manual for the 3808, it does look a bit detailed, but I think if you do some basic setup (connect your main speakers, monitor/TV, etc.), switch your monitor to the input the the receiver is designated to, you will find it much easier to use the GUI to configure everything... -TD

No I did not run the auto cal

I have read through the manual I did do the firmware update and I did get the the radion to come on

the only thing I have hooked up to the reciver is the audio from the DVD player (one headache at a time ) I could not get any sound from the DVD player with coaxial cable then I tryed the RCA cable and I got sound but its real low even when I turn it I did switch it in the GUI to digital with the coaxial cable right now I only have four speakers hook center speaker is still packed away I still need a lot of help LOL

Thanks Tim

I think you just have to be a bit patient, Tim. That's a heck of a receiver and once you get familiar with things and get it squared away, you'll be pretty happy with it.

I'm sure you'll get it right soon enough though, like you'd said, one headache at a time... :) -TD

If you haven't done it yet you need to go into the system setup from the GUI and set the inputs for both audio and video. So whatever input number you used for the coax from the DVD player needs to be set to DVD and so on. It's complicated if you haven't done something like this before but you will need to do a similar setup with all the major AVR's on the market. I have a 3805 and most likely your 3808 has similar setup options. I'll monitor this thread closely if you have any other questions.

Depends if you want your receiver on everytime you watch TV. My setup is only component but works the same. I have a component splitter with one going to my 3805 and the other to the TV. For example in the morning before work if I want to watch the news I don't need to turn the whole HT on for just 15-20 minutes. With the HR20-100/700 or even HR21 you can have the HDMI go to the reciever and component to the TV for watching without your HT gear on.

Tim, the HR20/21 outputs both HDMI and component at the same time so other than an extra set of audio/video cables you can run it both ways if you like switching video through your receiver.

The audio setup on your 3808 is much more sophiscated, and better, than the one on my 3805. I'd run it and see if you like the results. You can always defeat it later if you don't like how it sounds.

Enjoy your new receiver. :D

You're welcome. Let us know what you think of the 3808 once you have everything connected and set properly.

Hello Tim.

If you plan on having this receiver set up 5 channel or greater and have a subwoofer, there is a neat little option to make your music come alive if you have large (yet small) fronts, but that have smaller drivers like mine(Auto setup showed Large but bottom end is a little light, this affects the way the auto setup sets up the SUB)
It's a Subwoofer option, and it can be set to take the bass from the rears or from the rears and fronts (when your auto setup detects large fronts it defaults to just the rears)
Setting is as follows: (The following is based on plugging in the SUB to the Sub out pre MONO connection not anything else. It might be the same but I have not tried it)
Press the "Menu" button on the remote (I use the non LCD screen remote the LCD one I found was rediculous)
Go to "Manual setup" press >
then go to the "Speaker setup" press >
Then go to the Supwoofer mode, press > and set it to LFE + Main
That made my sound come alive! The wife had commented that while listening to some MP3's it was tinny. So i started to look around because the Sub was not on in the Stereo output mode.
I have been playing with this 3808 for a couple weeks and I only found that option this morning :)...I never read manuals. Playing with the functions is so much more fun.

If you have no subwoofer, make sure the subwoofer selector is set to "none" or "off". Otherwise all your bass below the crossover point will disappear. This might explain why your bass is lacking in your mains.

Ok I now have everything hooked up DVD (component ) into 3808 DVR (HDMI) into 3808 HDMI out to TV also ran extra set of cables from both DVD and DVR to the TV so I could watch TV and DVD with out the receiver on I did have a problem with lip sync on the DVR going through the 3808 and I tryed both lip sync on and off no difference then I tryed to audio delay to 72ms and was much better still no perfect but close I used the other output out of the DVR direct to the TV then used the TV sound to sync the 3808 sound I still might just run the DVR stright to the TV not sure yet any thoughts on this.

I still have not ran the auto set up because I have not moved every thing back yet still in the middle of the living room and Im looking for a sub
