New Dedicated Theater

Hello all,

First, let me say thanks for the hard work that you folks do making it easy for us audio newbies to find great information.

Let me give a brief description of what I am doing. Skip this paragraph if you don't care, my questions will be below.

I am in the middle of finishing my basement, and as part of that project I am building a dedicated theater room. It will be a totally enclosed, 13'x 22' room, with only a 7'-6" ceiling height. I have mildly sound proofed it by installing ROXUL safe and sound insulation all the way around including the lid, and installed RC channel for all walls and lid as well. I have a 6' wide platform, 10" high in the back of the room, that I intend to put 4 theater style seats on, then install 3 to 4 theater seats on the ground level in front of those. I will project my picture directly on to the opposite wall, which has a level 5 drywall finish and will be painted with some type of screen paint (not sure about this) and will felt around the picture once it is established. I would like to install a 7.1 surround sound system with the components in a nook that daylights in the back to the small area under the stairs to the basement for easy access to the connections. whew...long winded.

First let me say that I would take recommendations of any kind as to the best 7.1 system set up for this room with a budget of $5K-7K. It would need to include a receiver, speakers, woofer and amp? (already own a projector, and intend to use X1 xfinity cable platform and PS4 for tv and video.)

After looking at reviews, I really like the SVS Ultra, or SVS Prime speaker systems, with one problem, I have my heart set on installing in-wall speakers for the surround. The room is a bit tight and I think they will help.

1) What in-wall speaker would you recommend to go with SVS floorstanders, center and sub?
2) Would you recommend a sub woofer outside of the SVS line?
3) Do the Def Tech CS 8060-8080 offer enough base for my application to eliminate the sub?
4) Is the Denon 4100x receiver a good match for this system, or do you recommend something else in that price range?
5) Recommendations for theater seating in the $300-$400 per seat range?

My final thought is that I would really like to stay in that budget range because the more I can save there, the more I can spend on theater seating. My kids will do a lot of gaming in this room as well, so I am not sure I want to give them anything higher end to abuse...

Thanks in advance for your help with this. I will post some pictures of my theater as it develops. It is in drywall phase now....

3) depends on your preference of bass. Some people will probably think it has enough bass for movies. Some will not.

4) I think the Denon 4xxx AVR would be great for any speaker system. It has dual subEQ, Audyssey XT32, Dynamic EQ (my favorite), and pre-outs for enternal amp if you fancy.

1. Are you not interested in wiring for Dolby ATMOS or DTS:X? Many people stick with speakers from the same brand, so I'd say research what SVS recommends to compliment the particular LRC you have chosen.

2. Lots of sub recommendations to include the SVS to include HSU Research, PSA, and others. Different taste for different people.

3. I would always use a sub, regardless of what other speakers I use. My personal thoughts is I want my center speaker to be a center speaker and not try to be a center speaker and a sub as that is what the CS8060is.

4. The lowest receiver from Denon that I would go with would be the AVR x4200w..note that the 4100 you listed is the older model. .

5. Theater seating is another area where something that is great for one person sucks for someone else. HTmarket is a good place to research seating.

If the 4100X has all the features he needs there is no point to pay more for 4200X. Great way to save money for other parts, like speakers.

I'd say Denon is a great choice, if you want to save $$ go with a year-old model from here.

SVS makes great subs, but if you want to check out other options, go with the usual suspects: PSA, Rythmik, Hsu. Your room is on the small side, which saves $$: larger space means your subwoofer costs more. And yes, if this is a dedicated theater, you want a subwoofer.

Don't know anything about in-wall surrounds, but I'd say don't worry about staying with one brand. Get something decent for the surrounds and spend all the extra dough on your mains/center.

You always want a sub for HT applications. Even if you run full range speakers for mains due to the LFE output from movie titles. Specific Low Frequency Effects that you can't feed into your mains unless they have a powered bass section and even then, it isn't the same.

Thanks all. I will probably go with the SVS Ultras for the LCR and the recommended sub in the same line, I am leaning toward SpeakerCraft for the in wall speakers...

Ok, I met with an AV guy at the home show I was a part of and he is certain I want Atmos. I have just finished the drywall of my theater but have almost decided to add 2 speakers in the ceiling. Is two enough? Is there a lot of content with Atmos sound? (movies, video games, etc.) My speaker selection might go to SVS Prime instead of Ultra so that I can afford the Denon X6200W, any opinions or suggestions?
