New centre channel and some questions on Panels and stands

I wanted to share my new purchase for those who are interested. This weekend, I picked up the Totem Tribe 5 center channel in satin black for $2300 reg price = 3k. I got it price protected until boxing day so it’ll be the best deal I would think. Anyway, it sounds great… clear dialogue as well as good bass representation from its woofers.

I am happy with the purchase but I have a couple of questions:

  1. As you can see from the pics, it is a little low. I would like the tweeters from the mains to be at the same level as the Tribe tweeter. I looked online for some stands and I think I could easily just make one or two small ones from oak. I was also thinking of slapping one of these on the top for absorbtion - http://www.auralex.com/new/ProPADSpecSheet.pdf What do you think?

  1. My second question is about sound absorption. I’ve seen a couple of you tube videos on DIY panels. I was wondering if I should use any special kind of sound proofing? How thick? Can I cover it with any type of fabric?

Please take a look at my pics on my Google docs below: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17yI_9KZH08p_jFKmufx5MEm0RSfV_xDsexcUuNmc4QY/edit?usp=sharing

I think you are approaching this all wrong, if it were me I would mount the center channel under the tv at the level you want... You can get a small cantilever mount for a tv and install it on the wall uncer the tv with your center channel and then move it where ever you want it... I wouldn't lift the towers, I like the center channel about listening height...

as for the sound panels, there are some companies that make them really affordable, I have never made them myself, others here have and should chime in...

Hey there,

I was thinking on mounting the centre channel but the thing is... I will be moving soon so I don't want to bother with mounting it now. The towers are fine I am not planning on raising them at all. The only problem is that I would like the tweeter to be inline with the tower's tweeters. If I mount the speaker, it would be behind my towers. I wonder if this would be a problem.

A slight delay from your room eq should take care of the difference in distance. If your speakers are in a straight line then the distance to your ears is already off. (the center channel will be closest)
