New Build 5.1 Pre-Wire, All Speakers in Ceiling?

Hi all,

I recently bought my first house as a new build and made the mistake of adding a 5.1 pre-wire without talking through the locations of the speakers. I assumed they knew what they were doing in placement (ha!).

I moved in and am ready to get a 5.1 system installed. I realized, though, that I have 5 wire locations and they're all in the ceiling.

Is this 5.1 "pre-wire" for all of the speakers in the ceiling? I've read a bit and run into the Dolby Atmos systems but I am having a tough time deciphering if my wiring is designed for that or not.

Should I put the L/R & FL/FR in the ceiling and then the center/sub by the TV? Or should I try to put the center in the ceiling as well?

Sorry this train of thought is a bit chaotic, but I am a bit lost where to start.

Thanks!

I recommend your L/C/R all go in-ceiling. Don't separate your main 3

You also need speakers with Engineered Back Boxes that are Aimable to the Listening Position

Subwoofer can be free standing

Personally I wouldn't want my 5.1 setup only in the ceiling. I'd use two or four of them for Atmos if reasonably placed, and then add at least a 5ch layer below depending on room size. You consider a 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 setup instead? What avr do you have?

Don't know what they did particularly to prewire (hopefully its up to code at least as well as of sufficient gauge) but hopefully adequate for Atmos or putting your regular 5ch up there. Where in the room did they provide for avr placement and what kind of wall plate or connectors/leads did they leave? Was the sub also wired for the ceiling? You still need to cut holes for speakers/sub? Got pics?
