Thanks to Loveinthehd for the direction and everyone else for advice. Replaced the Onkyo crap in a box with :
-4 DCM MTX TP160C Bookshelfs - $199
-MTX Musica6c center (couldn't find TP160C in black)- $49
-Dayton Audio Sub 1200 - $149
-Onkyo TX-Sr494 -$199
Total $600
I know it's not a great system, but I hope it will tide me over until the wife graduates from college in 3 years.

You did good! I suspect most of us went through a period when we were young not being able to afford many things we wanted. Your day will come.

You mean the TP160S bookshelves and 160C center, right? I own those bookshelves and I think you did really well. Those speakers punch way above their most recent pricing. They're legit good speakers. Congrats!

I mistyped TP160S bookshelf. So I was looking for the TP160C center, but couldn't find one that matched the others in black. I suppose I should have just got the cherry set, but I just really don't like fake wood veneer pattern on anything, makes me instantly think Ikea cheapo crap. So I thought that this had similar specs (MTX MUSICA6C ), it was only 50 so I thought if it was no good I could find something else to replace it relatively easy. I figured it couldn't be terrible.
