New 3.1 System recommendations please

I have $1,000 - $1,250 to spend on a 3.1 HT system. I plan to add the surrounds at a later date when I an afford them. I was planning to buy the Onkyo 606 and am looking for speaker recommendations for the mains, center and sub. My room is rather large at 22x18 and to complicate the matter it has a cathedral ceiling that tops out at 22 ft. Its also hardwood. The wife is not very receptive to large speakers wither but she is pretty flexible! I currently have Bose 901's in there and unfortunately they sit on top of an 8ft built in bookcase. The sound from this setup is not very good (particularily for music listening), the sound varies tremendously depending on what seat you happen to be in! Any suggestions on possible speaker combos to check out and where to place the speakers would be appreciated.

That's a good size room that would probably benefit greatly with a set of towers.
A pair of Axiom M60's (from their factory Outlet Store) and an Outlaw sub (if they are still on sale) would put you in that range. http://www.axiomaudio.com/m60.html

Oops forgot you need a center also. You could get their M22 bookshelf speakers to save enough for the center. I've been using just a pair of Polk bookshelves while I await my speaker order and I don't seem to miss anything without a center. This is my first HT I am setting up and am anxious as to what a center will add that a "good" set of mains can't give.
