Neverending Story.........

I finally got around to posting a little bit of what I have at home. We purchased our house back in April. Everything's going into the living room right now, which is 22'x13'x9' (tv on the narrow side, slight vaulting on one side of the TV). The floors are all wood/tile, but hopefully my wife will be picking out an area rug and new paint soon. (I absolutely hate the gray walls)

Keep in mind that the audio end of it is pretty old.

My current setup consists of:
  • Samsung 5085W 50" DLP TV
  • Panasonic DVD-F65 5-Disc DVD Changer
  • Dish Network 811 HDTV Receiver
  • Sony STR-DE515 ProLogic receiver (circa 1995)
  • Sony SS-MF515 Speakers (Also from the mid-90s)

I finally can afford to start upgrading a little at a time, so I'll be upgrading to a Yamaha RX-V2500 next paycheck. After that, I plan on upgrading the speakers either to the JMLabs Chorus S series or Definitive Tech Mythos One/Two/Three speakers.

I'm also still up in the air about the subwoofer, and trying to decide between the Outlaw LFM-1 and the SVS 25-31PCi.

I'll post more pictures and updates as upgrades/improvements happen.

Thanks. The look is part of what has me leaning towards the Mythos over the Chorus speakers, as well.

Edit: IF the Chorus speakers do well during my demo, that is...

New toys!!!

Well, I bit the bullet and went out tonight to pick up my Yamaha RX-V2500. I don't have time tonight to hook it up, but will hopefully be able to hook it up and all this saturday while the wife is at work. :)

Assuming I don't get yelled at for buying the darn thing. ;)

But at least this puts me one step closer to having an updated system.

Make time :p

When I get new equipment, I would miss anything or stay up as late as I need to hook it up and demo it.

But what do I know, I'm not a doctor....

Heh. Well, what I would have missed out on is picking my wife up from work. (having one car bites)

Besides, I plan on setting it up on Saturday while she's at work. Should give me a good solid 6 hours to set it up and work on it without interruptions.

Okay, so I got the RX-V2500 hooked up today. I had to go and pick up some (Accoustic Research) TOSLink cables, because my old receiver only had analog inputs. And the sound is incredible. So far, I've watched bits of SW:ROTS, X:2, and listened to some DVD-A's. (nothing multichannel yet, since i only have two speakers. *Sigh*)

But so far, it is an incredible receiver, and I couldn't be happier.

Gellor,

For the next photos, if you aimed at your TV, try not using the flash but put ambient lights on (but you can keep the TV on). You can then adjust brightness in your photo edit. This will not cause to have a flash reflecting in your screen.

Yeah, I'll try with the next pictures I take. (the last ones I took at night and the lighting in that room bites.)

Heh. No game systems yet...that was off of one of the DiscoveryHD programs.

Speaking of which, after this weekend I will be adding a new component...an Atari 2600!!! :) (My parents are moving to Indiana and they found it wrapped up in a box where its been for 20 years or so.) Yeah, I know its old skool, but something about pacman on the big screen just makes me salivate.

*sigh* saving takes forever. I'm about 1/2-way to saving for one of the Supercubes. (Unless SVS comes out with their small, sealed sub before then.) I'm figurning buy the sub first and then replace the mains. Backwards, I know...but one of the pairs of speakers I'm considering requires a sub.

Oh...and finished painting the room. No more ugly grey. We also got a pretty thick, wool rug put down between the couch and the TV, so some of the echoes have been reduced.

I really like Def Tech speakers but they can be harder to place than conventional passive speakers due to their power needs and built in subwoofer.

Just keep this in mind when you demo because it looks like you are really tight for space.

I love the stand and how clean your setup is. I am amazed how many people do not take the extra hour or so to clean up the wires and make it look the way you have. Great Job!

Thanks. There's really no reason not to clean up the cables, especially when that stand has built-in cable management.

I'm not considering the Def Tech BP speakers...no room for them, and the room acoustics aren't good for bp speakers. (there would be a wall behind one and open entryway space behind the other.) Right now, if I go with the def-tech speakers, I'd be going with the Mythos. (wife likes the look, and they sound pretty good to me.) If not those, then probably the Monitor Audio RS6's. Both should be pretty easy to place and would fit nicely in the small space.

Updates: As soon as we can schedule the electrician, we're going to be updating the lighting in the room. (currently its a single track light reminiscent of 1980)

At the same time, he'll be splitting the outlet behind the TV off onto a seperate circuit. I'm really looking forward to that...no more burnt bulbs, no more blown fuse when my wife vacuums!

You think thats bad, my computer shuts off every time the vacuum goes on.

When my room is reno'd I will have 2 dedicated circuits. I can't wait, but I have to, could be a couple years yet.. :(

More updates...the electrician came out and rewired the whole room...new recessed lighting, new dedicated 20amp circuit for the HT. Things are SO much happier now.

Also, last night I replaced the lightswitches with Lutron remote control dimmers, and programmed them into my Harmony remote...now, I can be as lazy as I wanna!
