having some trouble getting dolby digital using netflix from roku connected to tv

3.0 setup with denon. i am using audyssey and have avr hooked up to tv via optical. towers and center set to large. audio settings in roku are set to auto. digital on tv audio settings.

movies in netflix arent giving the option of 5.1 surround in the movie audio settings. just english or spanish options. wondering if its because its a 3.0 setup?

i do have another bedroom with a 5.1 setup, connected the same way via optical. i get surround sound dolby digital on that setup. any ideas?

Hey Brady!
I just saw this and I have similar set ups in kids and guests beds that I only stream thru and use older gear / sacs / amps etc... I'm pretty sure someone else has mentioned this (and since I've not enough time to read this) and incase someone didn't mention it, IMHO, it sounds to me like one or maybe all (depending on your AVR) DACs are having issues. What AVR is it? Have you looked for any new firmware updates or have you tried doing a factory reset on it? I'd call the manufacturer to find out if they know of the issue and possibly s fix.
Just my pennies worth...

Hope u get it going ur Way bro!

Good luck

First, verify your Roku is capable of 5.1 for Netflix. Not all devices are capable of 5.1 with Neflix regardless of what the stream on Netflix says.

Then there's the setup of the device - in digital audio settings you have to enable it, which ultimately may mean you have to choose a format for it like my Fire TV. Anything multi-channel is passed as DD+ by the unit, not unlike many TVs. The TV may be a factor as well, as its settings will interfere with that too, since you are technically relaying the audio via the TV, so check the audio out there too. If your TV has ARC, you may have to enable that to get 5.1, or the similar to the above, set it to output 5.1 in a format of your choosing (dd, dts, etc...)

GREAT Answer and Excellent Points!! A Must do first before my assumption! I automatically assumed you'd already performed those task...
Good luck

Plug your roku into the receiver and then only have one HDMI from the output of the receiver to the input of the TV. No reason to do it any other way.

A lot of TVs will only output stereo from optical so that's probably the issue. Even still I'd hook it up like I said above.

Denon 1712 is a great unit!
No features to get excited about, but for doing what it should day in and day out without a hiccup, it is hard to beat.

Good combo, but IIRC the TV is what is causing your issues. Pretty sure it's limited to 2ch output.
