Hello all,
this is my first post of many im sure.

Spare bedroom(10x12) turning into tiny media room. Looking for good, rich surround for movies and especially video games even at lower levels (aka all else sleeping). I would "like" to spend under$1500 for speakers and sub. suggestions?

I have a Sony STR-DG720 receiver right now, which I will upgrade in the near future.

thanks all

Thanks for the response. Other then price, why do you so firmly suggest this set?

you could also do these with a strong sub, ie Epik Empire, while it is on sale @799 (50%off ;)). There are a few good sets in the SVS's price range and the SVS performs very well for the price, so its an easy recommendation for us to make.

Speakers are very subjective so what I like you may hate and vice-versa. But let's look at some options and I'll assume space is at a premium.

Option 1
Is AVRat's suggestion of the PB12-NSD system bundle. I haven't heard the bundled speakers but their subs rock.

Option 2
Three pair of Behringer B2030P studio monitor bookshelf speakers ($131/pr). The Behringers are front ported so you can hang of them flat on the walls if you like. However they are a bit too industrial looking for some people. The plus side of these is they excel in small spaces. Don't let the low price fool you - do WmAx's suggested easy DYI mods and they rock! We're up to $400 so let's shop for a sub or two. Space is going to be tight in that room so how about an eD A5s-300 or two - I'd start with one but they are cheaper in quantities of two. :D I have a very similar setup in my home-office.

Option 3
Four Boston Acoustics CS26 bookshelf speakers ($78ea shipped). I use two of these on Pinpoint AM10 wall mounts as mains in my master bedroom. Add a CS225 center for about $150, and a subwoofer or two and you're set.

Option 4 - Going deluxe!
Two EMP Impression E5Ti mini-tower speakers (review) for $500 shipped. An EMP Impression E5Ci center for $220, and one pair of EMP Impression E5Bi bookshelves for $250/pr. I haven't heard these but they have a great reputation. Add an eD A5-300 and your $1500 is spent. I'd set the mains about 15-18" from the front wall and the bookshelves 3-5" from the side walls.

For a receiver I'd look at a Refurbished Onkyo TX-SR707.

wow, thanks everyone for all of the info. I have a lot to decide on now.

Sholling, regarding "option 2" you mentioned using 3 pair of bookshelfs? no center? If this is what you were saying, why not do that same thing with the other options?

thanks again all, Ill let you know which way I go:cool:

Behringer doesn't make a center so you're stuck using one of the bookshelves for a center. It looks a little funky but it will work just fine. Yes that will leave you with a spare but you can save that for use as the start of a bedroom system or a test subject to experiment on when playing with WmAx's mods. However I'd give them a go stock before playing with mods.

BTW if you decide to wall mount the Behringers I'd isolate them from the wall using a tiny bit of weather strip or acoustic foam on the back corners.

There are many factors to consider before buying your sound system. But in your description of your room my opinion is to buy a Boss Speakers 13-15 inches just to maximize the sound in your room. It is really good when you have a small and tight room.
