I am a newbie for the most part and having trouble deciphering the cryptic language the instructions/setup guides come in.

I am trying to optomize the performance of my receiver and blue ray player but not exactly sure what I am switching around and why...

for example~ Bitstream or BD video Secondary or PCM. As of now I set everything to be sent out as bitstream... should I go back to the other option...PCM?

How about component video resolution? Right now it is factory set at 480i and can go up to 1080i.

On the reciever for HDMI resolution it is factory pre-set at "through" which "does not upscale any analaog video signals" . My options are 480/576P which upscales to either or... 1080i, 1080p or 720p which upscales to either or....

Can the yamaha process signals with sampling frequencies of 96 kHz or should I scale it back to 48kHz? This is an option under the PCM Down Conversion application. Does it even matter?

Everything is running through HDMI cables and the TV is a panasonic 50" plasma 1080p...

I never expected this to be so technical... so now I have a great system (?) but not quite sure how to get it setup properly! HELP

Some tips:

- Blue ray audio: bitstream is the best quality. PCM is used only when bitstream is not supported (this depends on how you connect your HDMI cables and what component receives/decodes the sound). If bitstream works, leave it that way.
- The component video resolution setting is default set to 480i because a lot of TV's/beamers don't accept high-resolution signals like 1080p. Usually this is not important if you don't use the component outputs (3 separate cinch connectors). Since you use HDMI cables I don't think you need to change this.
- Your TV accepts 1080p signals, so your receiver should be set to "through". You don't want your receiver messing with the HDMI signals since your TV accepts all standards. The only reason to set your receiver to upscale signals, is when your TV does a bad job in upscaling, which is unlikely with a Panasonic Plasma.

If you're still not sure about your settings: change one setting at a time and just see whether it gets better or worse.

If I remember correctly, I have my BD30 set to Bitstream everything. Now my receiver is a Yamaha 663 - so not the same as yours. The 663 cant matrix a 5.1 signal to 7.1, I think Thats why I had the TrueHD and DTS HD set to bitsteam and others set to PCM and BD video Secondary to ON at one point. Either way, I ultimately went back to all bitstream with BD secondary OFF and it seems to work well that way.

I don't even have a Yamaha. However, I can tell you pretty much any receiver (with a DTS logo) made in the last 3 (really 5) years will do 96 kHz. Regular DTS (not just DTS-HD MA and DTS-HD HR) will do 96 kHz/24-bit audio. DTS-HD HR/HR, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DVD-Audio will do up to 192 kHz/24-bit audio (albeit two channel). SACD? Well, that's a different animal.

Mtbound, what Blu-Ray player do you have? n/m--I see BD30. Yes, set it to bitstream, as it doesn't internally decode. Who is your multichannel provider (Comcast, Dish, DirectTV, Time Warner Cable, Cox, etc.)?

J. Grimmerink is right. That Panny plasma will likely do leagues better upscaling than your receiver.
