Need some receiver advice...

Currently I have an Onkyo TX-SR600, Klipsch Quintet II speakers, and a Klipsch KSW10 sub. Recently a friend went all out on his HT; dumped 10k into it, and he sold a pair of Klipsch RSX-5s for almost nothing. I was looking to upgrade my receiver in the near future before getting the speakers, but I'm gonna go ahead and do it now. I'm looking to spend somewhere in the $500-600 range. I found a pretty good deal on a Yamaha HTR-5890, $440+ship, and have heard good things about it, but I want to get some input/suggestions from some of the "experts" here :)

I doubt anyone would call them self a expert, and if they do then their foolish.
A professional, yes. But expert is something totally different.
Me, I'm a nobody.

Anyhow, my .02, I am assuming you mean this http://www.american-deals.com/shop/Product.asp?sku=HTR5890
They more than likely are not a authorized dealer. That is a choice you need to make.
It is one of the top receivers in that price category. So you should be fine.
I'm sure you know, that those Klipsch speakers are very efficient. And will need very little power to get them to reference levels.
That being the case, the 5890 will be plenty of power for them.
From my understanding the YPAO does work pretty good on them, but you may still want a SPL meter (unless you already have one). There is plenty of options with that receiver, very good controls. So that should be a fine purchase. Are you looking for other model suggestions? Is that budget very strict? You may want to look at a Denon 3805, but that would be a tad over budget. Unless you find a bargain somewhere for it...
Here is a refurb for 649.00 http://www.secondact.biz/Product.aspx?ProductID=AVR3805
Which would be another question, is a refurb or used a possibility?

Given the fact that you are using Klipsch speakers I doubt you would hear any difference with a new receiver, but with new speakers you will hear a hugh difference. Get the new speakers first IMO.

been busy...

I haven't had anytime to check the responses lately, but thanks for the input.

Brian - Yes, a refurbished/used receiver would be an option. I'm a 22 yr old college student in my 3rd year and don't have a whole lot of money because I am not able to work full-time. I've done some research on the Denon 3805 you suggested and from everything I've read it seems like an excellent receiver. I would be willing to go a little over my budget to be sure I'm making the right buy. A friend of mine has the Yamaha and is going to come over and hook it up here so I can listen to it and check out what it has to offer. And now that the semester is nearly over and Xmas break is coming up in the next 2 weeks, I'll try to get out to a store and see if I can get a sales rep somewhere to hook up the 3805 to the speakers I have or as close to them as possible. To answer the question about the sound meter, yes, I have one.

Nick - I totally agree about new speakers over a new receiver, and as I said before I recently picked up 2 Klipsch RSX-5s for a rediculously low price. I now use those as my front L/R and it is a definite improvement. I'm more than likely going to pick up the matching center around Xmas time. Then I'll be able to use the 4 sattilites from my current Quintet set for the 4 surrounds to make up a 7.1 system. As to not hearing much of a difference with just a new receiver, in any other case I would agree with you. However, the particular Onkyo model I own has 2 known flaws with it's DD EX decoder. Not all TX-SR600s have these problems, but on some, mine being one of them, the rear center is always out of phase. The other issue is the receiver does not properly supply bass to the front LCR speakers. Had I not been a total noob when I first got the receiver, would have done some research on it. But since it played back standard DD and DTS w/o normally, I didn't realize there was a real problem, as stupid as that sounds><. It wasn't until recently when I added those 2 new speakers that I discovered the rear center phase issue, and when I looked that up I also found information in regards to the other problem.

Anyways, it's tired and I need to get some sleep.
