Hi all,

Her's the thing. I'm totally new to this domain and I need some advice to buy a good system. I read a lot of post on this forum but nothing help me so far. I want sound system for 70% Music and the rest for T.V. and gaming (PS3). I can listen to anything from classic to hard metal and techno.

First of all, I planned to use my PS3 to play some cd, dvd and mp3 and I planned to stream some music over internet too. Is it a good idea to use the PS3?

I'm in an appartement. I am not interested in running wires to the rear exept if the speakers are wireless. So I planned to have a 2.1 sound system. What do I need? Is it possible to have a good sound system for 1300- 1500$?

Thank you all.

If you are talking about a receiver, two speakers and a sub, you should be able to put together something decent for that amount.

Since you are in an apartment, you probably don't have a lot of space to fill so don't need a huge receiver. You could look into a stereo receiver or integrated amp with sub out but there probably aren't a ton of choices. I'd look into an entry level AVR, maybe a 5.1 receiver that has HDMI capability. You should be able to find something decent for under $500. Look into Onkyo or Yamaha for bang-for-buck.

The sub is the thing you don't want to skimp on. A cheap sub will give you one note bass. I don't have any specific recommendations. I might suggest something form Hsu Research but I'm sure others will weigh in with better suggestions.

With whatever is left, you should be able to get some decent monitors and stands or decent small towers. I'm a bigger fan of the former, especially where you don't have to fill a large area. There are lots of decent choices but I would look for something with a 5-6.5 inch woofer so you can cross to the sub at 80 Hz.

Sure it is! Is this the total amount you would ever consider putting into it, or are you willing to add-on later? :D

Also, is this a brick-wall budget, or is there a little leeway?

I'll chime in to say that the ps3 is perfectly fine for what you want to use it for, the only downside is the user interface can be somewhat cumbersome but if you like it that's all that matters.

If you have one of the older ones, it will even play SACD. Not that I'd recommend anyone waste their money on SACD. :p

The only problem with the PS3 is it can't play .WAV or .FLAC.

It's an okay idea, but my PS3 has some fan and disk drive noise that can mask some low level detail.

Certainly. A cheap integrated amp, plus some Soundfield Audio M1s and you're set :D
