I recently auditioned B&W 683's and really liked the way they sounded. I heard them playing in the store on a Marantz 7002.

My friend tells me I should buy a Denon instead because a)marantz is overpirced, and b) he can get me great deals on Denons.

So my question is which receiver should I get in order to get the full potential from the speakers.

So far my setup is as follows:
Pioneer 6070HD plasma
PS3

I also have another question. Should I take video upscaling into consideration? And which receiver is best at getting the full potential of the plasma, ps3, and speakers.

Thanks in advance, I need help in this since I know nothing about avr's.

i think on one of the av rants someone said that be weary of the statement "my friend says" 1. what denon model? 2. Equal power should be equal power 3. tell your friend denon and marantz are of the same parent company 4. dont let your friends spend your money 5. listen to 4

Many people also say that Denon is overpriced compared to Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, etc. The 683s are easily powered so most mid-level receivers will have no problem driving them. If I'm not mistaken, your plasma is an older model and may benefit from the newer scaling features available in the new receivers if necessary. Which one works best for you would have to be tested. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

Yep, Denon or Marantz will be great choices. I have in my head that marantz is better for some reason, but either will be an extremely high quality unit. Just depends on the amount of money you want to blow :) Yamaha also makes some good receivers in that same price range. Any of the around $1k receivers will have upscaling almost, and will do a good job. When comparing your "friends" prices, check the original msrp vs. the msrp of the equivalent marantz and the features between the two to make sure he's really getting you a "better" deal.

I agree with the rest of the posters either one. I did not get a Marantz because they did not seem to have that greet of bass management (80 hz was lowest crossover point) (that was before the new ones came out in late 07 though

Get the Marantz 8002

Very very nice receiver.

Here is one place to buy for $1349. Pricesgrabber.com

I didn't realize when I bought online but Marantz and a lot of other dealers have online authorized distributers. I bought from Hypathia Way and received a brand new nicely packed receiver. I contacted Marantz with my serial number and Marantz said the serial number was valid and the would provide me full warranty and full support.

Denon is good , but I like Marantz much better, especially the 8002.

Good luck in your decision. The B&W 683s are a very nice speaker choice.

I would just like to say GO SLOW richmusic187 !
There are allot of fine AV Receivers out there today. The choices seem endless when one is looking. I would concentrate on the HDMI formats, Video scaling and amount of power you want to drive your speakers. Is it going to be just for Surround Sound or are you going to use it for Music too ? Do you need allot of inputs and outputs ? So on and so forth.

The Denon my friend mentioned is the 988.

Because I have an older model plasma (I cant believe 1 year is old) I want something that going to upscale the video. The ps3 does it for blue ray but i'm not sure about regular dvds.

The unit is going to be used for mostly playing music but maybe i'll upgrade to surround sound one day.

Will the 8002 provide proper upscaling as well as enough power to support a surround system?

I also just stumbled on the Denon 3808CI. How is that compared to the 8002?

I never knew building a stereo would be this difficult.

The Marantz 8002 is 125w x 7 ($2,000?)
The Denon 3808 is 130w x7.

I recommend the Denon 4308, which is 140w x 7 for $1,629 brand new:
