Need some help with my new Pioneer VSX-1020 receiver

I just got it last night and can't figure out how to set it up to watch TV and listen to music at the same time. I connected it the way it says on the manual: cable box out to receiver and from receiver out to TV. The problem is that I have to choose what source to play and can't choose both TV and music at the same time. Is there a way to do this? Thanks....

The only way to play two sources at once is to have Zone-2 set up with it's own speakers and fed with an analog source.
I couldn't download the entire manual, but doubt if it's changed for a newer AVR.

Wow, that sucks...I can't have all these speakers in my living room... there must be some other way using my TV or cable box? anybody else has any ideas?

Using the receiver? No. Connect the cable box straight to the tv and bypass the receiver. Listen to music with the receiver and speakers and watch cable on the tv.

So that means that every time I want to see a movie I have to reconnect all the wires to the receiver? Holy...!!!

I was thinking about like you said connecting the HDMI to cable box and the RCA's from TV to receiver which will also suck because I wanted to use the HDMI to the receiver to get on screen receiver menu unless you can still get it with RCA's?

This is old but I just stumbled upon this in a search since I got my 1020. I had the same problem, I wanted to listen to music (ipod) and watch TV at the same time for things where you dont really need the sound (sports). All I did was use a component cable to go from my cable box directly to my TV. I still have an hdmi coming from my cable box to my receiver. You switch to the correct source on the receiver for the music, and then change your TV's input source to the component that you plugged in.

Thanks for your response. That's what I've been doing. I just don't think the RCA's produce the same picture quality as the HDMI, but hey the solution works.
