I have a budget of $3500 for an audio system. I have a fujitsu plasma and a power center.

I would like to purchase a surround sound package 5.1 and a subwoofer.

This is a first time home theater purchase. I previously had the Kef 3000 system, but my roomate moved out with it.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the site. Perhaps you could elaborate on your needs. Do you need just speakers, or does the budget call for a receiver and DVD player as well? How large is your space (cu ft) for sub reco purposes?

Sorry about that.

I live in an alcove studio in NYC. The area is about 250 sq ft.

I currently own a PS3 for DVD's and Blue Ray. I also have a DVD recorder and a DVR. I also have a marantz RC 9500 remote, so I am all set there.

I need speakers and a receiver and any other goodies you can think of :)

Assuming area about 15 x 15.

Go with Marantz 5002 or Yamaha 663 or Onkyo 605 AVR and Def Tec speakers, Pro Cinema 1000 System (4-ProMonitor 1000s, 1- ProCenter 200, and 1-ProSub 1000).

Good luck :),

Will the system be used for HT or will it double for music use as well? If its for music, build the system around music which I did and you'll have a great HT rig as well. The reverse cannot be said unfortunately. I have recommendations but would like to know more of your requirements.

I am more of a Movie and TV guy. I watch a lot of blue-ray movies. I don't need the system for music really. I listen to some music, but 95% of the time it is for surround sound.

I looked at the B&W 684 Series last night speaker packages. They sounded great, but am wondering if I am getting a great system that i can use to fill up a room and transport to a home (if I ever move). I am really looking for a nice starter system that I can transport to a new room and still have it fill up the room.

The B&Ws are a good choice and will easily fill a room twice the size of yours. B&Ws due tend to be a little pricier than others of similar sound quality. I tend to recommend speakers that have a similar driver configuration as the 684s for systems involving a separate sub. Other speaker companies’ products you may want to consider are; Aperion Audio, Ascend Acoustics, Athena Tech, Axiom, Dali, Definitive Technology, Dynaudio, Energy, HSU, Infinity, JBL, KEF, Klipsch, Martin Logan, Monitor Audio, NHT, Paradigm, Phase Technology, Polk Audio, PSB, RBH, Rocket, SVS, Vandersteen, Vienna Acoustics, etc.

What was your opinion of the KEF sub? Most HT enthusiasts will want a sub that digs deeper than the KEF. For a sub, you’ll want to look at HSU, SVS, AV123, eD, and Epic for starter, which are all internet direct companies.
