Hey guys, a good friend of mine recently bought a house and I convinced him to set up a nice home theater. He had some surround sound before, but he really stepped it up in the new place. The system consist of the following,

TV: Samsung UN60F6300AFXZA
Blu-Ray: Samsung BDE5400
Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1019
Front: EMPTek E55Ti
Center: EMPTek E5Ci
Surround: EMPTek E5Bi
Sub: SVS PB12-NSD
Remote: Harmony 900

I will get some shots of the install, but it will be Audioholics approved! The TV is hung above the fireplace, with the center on the mantle below. The center is wired directly because of space constraints, but the rest of the speakers have a wall plate with banana plug terminated wires so it looks nice and finished. All of the equipment is located in the basement and all of the wiring is run through the walls. We need to make some nicer wires from the plates to the speakers, but it all looks VERY nice.

Anyway, we are going to dial it in this weekend, and I am having a hard time finding some good settings for the TV. Usually I can find some good baseline settings, but so far I am coming up empty handed. I have a few calibration disc's, but I was wondering if I could get some help with at least general settings first.

Thanks,
Sean

Well we got to adjusting yesterday, and the audio went great, but the video... not so much. So I stared out with the Spears & Munsil Blu-Ray 2nd edition. I ran through the video section and tried adjusting based on my previous experience. I turned off all of the additional processing in the TV, set it to "Movie" (more on that in a sec), and "Warm 1". Then I ran through the contrast, brightness, color, tint, and it looked like garbage. I then read the manual and the website to make sure I was doing everything right. Starting with Contrast I couldn't ever see a change in actual contrast. I really was making the display either brighter or darker overall. So after messing with it, I double checked the settings in the TV and in the player, set them accordingly, and still nothing really. In the instructions it said to adjust it up until the highest bar disappears, but like I said adjusting the contrast had no effect in this regard. So I ended up setting it pretty high and leaving it (I think ~85). Brightness was no problem on the test disc, same goes for color and tint. Although I could never get the block on the left side to appear completely black. The color and tint were spot on with the right two squares though. Needless to say I thought, according to the test disc anyway, that the color and tint were spot on.

Fast forward though a lot of back and forth with adjusting everything because I didnt believe the test disc, we decided to go with the settings that we got from the disc. We popped in Casino Royale and right away we all thought it looked like garbage. The "Movie" mode flattens all the color a lot for starters. I know that color and saturation are usually cranked up from the factory, but it desaturated it quite a bit. Also it had a lot of red push, very noticeable which was annoying since I thought color and tint were dead on. So I changed it from "Warm 1" to "Standard" which made it much better. I also changed it from "Movie" to "Neutral" which helped, but it was still no good. At that point I was very frustrated and I reset the picture. I turned off all of the "enhancements" set it to "Neutral" and left it. To me it was over saturated with color, and a little too bright. The others there thought it looked great of course.

So what was I doing wrong?! My first suspect is the player, even though I changed it to output 4:4:4 which now that I type that I think is wrong. However the other options were Auto, and then two that had some processing but I cant remember what. The TV has a LOT of adjustment options including white balance, color space, and so on but I played with them a little and couldn't get anything better. Mainly I played with the color space, and it had an effect but I couldn't get it dialed right with the manual settings (which are vast). The owner is perfectly fine with how it is right now, but even if I don't adjust it again I need to know for my own well being :)

HELP!

Do you have a THX mode on your TV? It's suppose to be pretty accurate. If you don't The Incredibles DVD has a custom THX version. My Vizio Is not advanced like your TV, so I can't really help you, but I'll try. On mine I use Picture/Custom Mode and adjust Back light, Tint, Contrast, Brightness, Colors, Sharpness and some other features. Mine was good after I used The Incredibles DVD and the link I gave for the CASINO ROYALE it helped the tint and got rid of the green. The other stuff looked great and didn't need any tweaking. Gonna look up your TV, but try what I advised.
