I need some advice, I am currently stationed in hawaii and I have the audio itch, I need some advice on HT systems. I have a room to myself with carpated walls. To me 5.1 is a min, I have to have it to watch movies. When I dont have it like something is missing. My price range is $500-$800. Let me know, the only store here right now is best buy. So Im limited on what i can do.

On such a tight budget, I would look at their open box items in the particular store. If your budget is for a receiver and speakers, I recommend that you buy the cheapest receiver that has the features you require, because the speakers will make more of a difference in the sound than the receiver will.

Looking at the moment, this would probably be my choice with your budget:

This, of course, is only because I am keeping with your specified restrictions. For anyone on the mainland, I would look at other stores.

Don’t you already have a system?
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54426

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V663
L and R: Klipsch RB-81
Cnter: Klipsch RC-61
Surrounds: Quintet 3 Surrounds
Sub: JBL P10SW
yes that is back home but shipping is very very expensive and those size speakers in a smaller room, well could be very bad. I need a budget system what it boils down to. im stuck in a 2d sound world right now and its driving me crazy. of course my system back home would blow anything that i could buy here away.

Have you had a chance to go to Best Buy and audition any of their systems? If so, were there any brands that you liked more than others?

Also, do you know if Amazon (or others) charges more for shipping to Hawaii? I'd think so, but I don't know. If they don't, then ordering online might be a good choice, too.

Two suggestions depending on your budget and needs

1. Subs make a sound system. I have Hsu and have been very happy with it.

You can get the STF2 with the Vantriloquists (4 small cubes and a bigger center) for about $550 before shipping. I don't know how expensive it is for shipping (my VTF3.3 was hideously expensive for them to ship 6 hours up the coast).

Ventriloquist isn't particularly pretty but it's an affordable way to get to 5.1 with fairly good sound and small packaging.

2. The other recommendation I would make is to check out Def Tech (Definitive Technology). If you go to their website, you can find their retailers including a few in Hawaii. They have some satellite sub systems that list for $800 or less. A friend was able to get one for quite a bit less (not sure if it was a special sale or what). He was very happy with the sound quality and they have multiple good reviews.
