Need Some 2.1 Advice

Hello guys,

Ive been snooping around the internet for a few days now, reading as much as I can about a very solid 2.1 system. This system will be used in conjunction with my computer. A lot of MP3's (High quality rips) and CD's. Games every now and then but I plan on buying some nice headphones later down the road for that. What I am really looking for is an awesome 2.1 system for under 1000$. Bookshelves + Receiver + Sub.

My room dimensions are 13x8 with 8 foot ceilings. I have been using these Logitech 680's for my computer for some time now and I believe it's time for a new system.

A nice pair of speakers has been extremely hard to narrow down as most of you know. Right now I am looking at:

Axiom M3's and M22's.
Ascend CBM-170 SE
Energy C3's

As for a sub, not really sure.
I guess energy makes some nice subs for music. Would like some opinions.

Receiver, I heard nice things about the Panny RX55 but it's almost impossible to find one now. I am very open to suggestions.

If you were handed 1000$ give or take, what would you spend it on. Remember this is for computer use primarily.

:) Thank you for the help.

First, I would step down in bookshelfs if your using a sub.

I have the C-1s, and I would use those as speakers. I'd add an Hsu STF-1 subwoofer, and a decent reciever (Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer) with the leftover funds.

Do you want a receiver that has 5.1 capabilities for use down the road, or just one for stereo? You can pick up a good 2.1 receiver for much less than a surround receiver with comparable quality. I'd recommend a quality HK unit like this:

Any of the bookshelves you've listed are great choices, but I would also look at the Onix X-LS bookshelves. They're made with high-quality GR-Research drivers and have a nice price tag.

As for a subwoofer, the Hsu STF-1 is a great choice. The price is great, as is the sound. The Onix X-Sub also looks like a great deal and sports a similar configuration to the STF-1. I would think that you could mix and match with any of the above choices and end up with something great.

Thank you for the input so far guys.

So that sub looks like a nice one for my price point.
C1's also look nice. You are talking about these right?

Or an older model?

So what your saying sheep is if i'm going with a sub, the other bookshelves I listed would overkill?

As for a receiver I am pretty torn. I guess all i need is a stereo receiver. If I ever wanted to go into a 5.1 setup, I wouldn't want it to be with a 300$ receiver.

The C-1s are cheaper. If you can find the C-3's for a good price, go for it. I was just suggesting the C-1's because you have a subwoofer for bass, and you could save some money by opting for the 5inch driver over the 6.5

Looks like i'm going with those c3's and the Hsu STF-1.

Now for a receiver. Can I get a few recommendations for both a Stereo and multi channel models? Looks like I can spend around 400$ if I really need to. I know this isn't that correct board to be asking that question on but Id like to keep all of this info in the same thread :). Thanks.

just so you know, a sub with C-3s will be pretty powerful, especially at nearfield. the C-3s seem to have a *lot* of bass energy, more than the typical bookshelf in this budget range. they can really thump. if it were me, i would get the C-1s for that kind of setup. if you plan to use the system for a lot of gaming, the C-3 plus sub will obviously give a more visceral impact. ;) but for music, the C-3 seems to have more than enough bass for *most* music. i don't even use my sub for 2-channel listening with the C-3s, they seem to sound more balanced without one.

in fact, i'll go further and say that if the receiver doesn't have a "small" setting for the speakers with a separate crossover setting for the sub like an HT receiver, i think C-3 + sub would be overkill. i say that because i've tried it, and you really have to set the sub x-over low (like at ~45-50 !!) to avoid that weird kind of interference in the lower frequencies. set any higher, and the sub and the C-3 bass fight each other and it sounds horrible. w/out sub, or with sub crossed over properly and speaker low freqs sent to the sub, it's fine, obviously. i've never had a 2.1 receiver, so i'm just not sure which ones have that capability (or do all of them?) so i just thought i'd throw that out there, fwiw.

Thanks for the response soundhound. Ive bought a stereo receiver and the c3's so far. Once I get them both in and set up I figure I'd listen to them and decide if I need a sub or not.

How would the C-3's compare to the Omni X-LS's?

good plan. ;) at first i was a little put off by the "flatness" of the energies in the midrange, but the more i listen to them, the more they start to grow on me. they are really good speakers, i think for a computer set up they'd be monsters. :D

HK came in. Hooked them up to my computer. GOD do these C3's sound amazing. Both my C3's and HK3480 came to a total of 440$. Speakers were demo and the HK was factory reconditioned.

The difference between this setup and my old Logitech Z680's is like night and day. Thanks to the people that helped. Now all I need is a good sub.

Edit: Both the speakers and receiver are in perfect shape. Got lucky :)
