User: My boss - new to audio.

Goal: System needs to be better than Bose for less money. Will be used primarily for surround sound (95%) vs music.

Need: 5.1 speaker system and receiver

Budget: best $1000 system preferred,
best $1500 system max.

Room - Finished basement – drywall walls, compressed fiberboard ceilings, carpeted floors over concrete

• Dimensions: Height=9’ x Length=15’ x Width=15’ (30’ open width)
• No acoustic treatments
• Cable connection is center of 15’ front wall.
• Furniture – Couch, loveseat, recliner

Plus: Would like a good subwoofer that can rock the room on DVD/Blueray soundtracks.

Thanks for your help.

I 2nd the Polk monitors from Newegg. I have done 3 setups with Polk speakers from Newegg. INCREDIBLE bang for the buck. The Monitor 60's will DESTROY any cubed Bose system.

the eDesign sub is nice. Also check out the BIC Acoustech PL-200 sub @ $329 or their H100 @ $259.

I have put a couple of H100's in for a budget option and been very pleased with the results.

If the Recession Buster speakers are still on sale at Madisound, that would be a good choice, too. Otherwise, Parts Express had a small 2-way on sale that I've heard and they're definitely worth considering.

Satellite speakers:

Denon AVR-1610:

Upgrade where needed.
They have a reference kit now too.

To answer your question, a pair of Insignia's from Best Buy is all it's going to take. :D

Thanks all,

I showed my boss this thread and you guys did well with the recommendations. I showed him that with the lowest price components you recommended, he could put together a system in the $600-$700 range, which he thought was about the most he wanted to put into the audio portion of his home theater. I also noted if he could increase his budget to the $1500 range, there is a lot of sound quality to be gained, but he wants to stick to the lowest price equipment. I think it should be better than any alternative in that range, such as HTIB.

The SVS package with a Denon 1610/590 is a good option. If smaller speakers are needed, Orb speakers with an HSU or SVS sub is also good.

There was a Denon 1610 on Monday selling for $300, and AH Store has some good Yamaha deals
Even less at Electronics Expo using the RECEIVERSALE coupon. $279 shipped last I checked.

Since you have the Recession Busters, let's hear more about them.
I love them, but you better build them sealed or they are way too live.

I found them best against the wall. They are unforgiving on recordings, but great for the Classical.

I really have grown to love them.
