Need Receiver Recommendations ($500-750)

Hey there, sorry to make a first post a plea for help, and furthermore probably a common one.

I'm looking at buying a set of speakers, sub, and receiver in the near future. After some browsing and reviews I think I'm going to give Axiom a try. Probably go with M50 or M22 v2 for fronts, VP100 for center, QS4 for surrounds (7.1), and an HSU STF-2. Closely following Audioholics recommendations. Any input on this too would be gladly appreciated. I'm very new to the world of high(er) end home theater.

Before that though I want to decide on a receiver. As stated my price range is $500-750. As for features... something that sounds awesome! As per the recommended systems guide here I was looking at the Denon 1708. I wouldn't mind more than 75 watts per channel, unless that's enough to make those axioms happy? I also found a good deal on an AVR-888.

Any recommendation of something similar/better and an explanation would be much appreciated. In the mean time I'm going to keep doing my own research, hope I can scrounge a thing or two up.

Thanks a lot for the help :)

Ah yes, and the room is around 1500 cubic feet.

Anyone got any input?
Hmm for that kind of money I would look at the following receivers:

Onkyo 7005/805
Yamaha RX-V661
Denon 1908
HK 247

Out of all those the Onkyo 805 offers the most features for it's price.

Hopefully it won't be too long for the Onkyo 875 or 905 to drop down in price. I'm in the same boat with a $800 price range but really like the models listed above.

I was notified a couple of days ago that the 805 is going for $700 from Fry's. I did know already that Onkyo Shop sold the refurbished 805 for $700.

In that price range I would choose the Onkyo 805 also.

Thanks for the pointers guys, I'll take a look into it.

ALSO, I hate Ipods, have never wanted one. BUT, if it's that easy to hook up to a receiver and flip through songs on one I may be tempted. Is their line out pretty decent? I have a generally ill conception of their SQ.

Is there anything that lets you plug in your ipod to the receiver and navigate through the songs with the remote via the TV screen? If there's that and good SQ... I may actually get an ipod.

Onkyo's SQ is in line with Denon, Yamaha, or any other receiver manufacturer. The Onkyo TX-SR805 has the most power and brains of the bunch.

The ipod DAC is actually a pretty nice DAC. I have an airport express which has the same DAC in it and it sounds pretty good on my Yamaha.

Eh my room is pretty small. I'll stay 5.1 for now, easy upgrade to 7.1 if need be.

I think that you are absolutely going to love the Axiom's in your setup. I currently run M22's, VP100, QS8 in my HT room and after 3 years still enjoy them everytime I fire them up.

WRT to your receiver I am currently running the Onkyo 705, which is a unit I borrowed from my brother who went overseas for work. I will be purchasing my own receiver in the future, but no rush as he is gone for about 7 more months. The sound with the 705 is just great and I can only imagine what the extra headroom with the 805 can provide in SQ.

I actually am strongly leaning towards an AV123 Rocket system now. The 805 is looking like the winner here too.

Although I have not heard the Rocket's everything that you read about AV123is very, very good.
