I recently purchased following configuration.

Front Infinity Beta 50
Rear Infinity Beta 20
Center Beta C360
Sub - Velodyne DPS12

I need to buy a receiver. I wanted to buy Yamaha RX-V757 but then I read somewhere that it is not powerful and I was concerned that it may not power my speakers properly. Do I need to go for RX-V1500 ? . I am looking for a dual voltage systems thus I made those choices.

Please let me know if RX-V757 will be adequate enough.

If you can afford it, I'd go for the more powerful amplifier. It matters how far you are sitting from the speakers. The RX-V1500 has the THX select certification, and I think this means that Lucasfilm rate it as adequate for 2-3 metres sitting distance at reference level playback.

Both amplifiers should manage comfortably if you are planning to listen at 'non-demonstration' volume levels. The amps appear to be in the same league as my own Denon amp. I usually use it with some dynamic range compression enabled to ensure no clipping. Running clean 105 dB peaks is rather demanding for an average amplifier. Dolby Digital compression can help to keep all the low volume bits audible.

I did quickly look up those speakers. Infinity don't provide much info on the speaker impedance, (i.e. frequency v. impedance v. phase curves) but I'd guess they'd be a fairly difficult load, because of their 3-way design. At least they are of good sensitivity, ~90 dB.

Couple of questions...

Webspider;

  • How large of a room will you be running this system in?

  • What's your listening source ratio (music to movies)?

The answer to these questions will help determine what you'll need from a receiver standpoint... -TD

What's your budget? Why Yamaha? The 1500 series is almost 10lbs more than the 757, so I would heavily weigh in favor of the 1500. Did you find a 1500 locally for a great deal, because they now have the 1600 out with more bells and whistles.

Another option to the 1600 would be the Onkyo 703, or Pioneer 9100. Both are running between $300 and $440 at Ubid.

Receiver advice

Hello Everyone

Thanks for your time and answer. Really appreciate your input. So here are answers
1) The room is around 18 X 20.
2) We will be mainly watching movies
3) We watch lot of Pal-Secam format movies and I was told I need a multi- system receiver to watch them, Correct me if I am wrong.
4) http://www.world-import.com has 1500 and 2500. I would love to get 1600 but I cant find them at this retailer.

So now that you have the facts pls let me know. Also do I have to have HDMI ?

Regards

Be careful where you buy Yamaha products. They are pretty much the strictest when it comes to their warranty. I'm in no way trying to diswade you from buying a Yamaha, I have the 1500 myself, if you are looking for a bargain you're taking a chance buying any electronics without a warranty. Buckeye's Ubid suggestion is a good one. While Yamaha will not honor a product bought there Onkyo and Denon will. Not sure about Pioneer.

Using uBid is a pretty good consideration. While they do not have the full manufacturer's warranty for most of their receivers, they still typically offer a 60-90 day warranty and in my experience, you're likely to encounter a problem w/in the first month of use, so 60-90 days isn't all that bad. And considering most manufacturer refurbs have been through a few rounds of QA, they are more likely to be issue free than some of the new compoenents. Of course it would be nicer to have the full 1, 2 or 3 year mfg. warranty, but the added warranty that more often than not isn't used usually comes with a a substantial difference in price.

I myself am using the RX-V2500 as a pre/pro and I have been completely satisfied with its performance and very happy with it's feature set. While this is a fairly sizeable room, the 1500/2500 would likely fill it pretty well, assuming you don't listen at loud volume levels for extended periods. If this were the case, you might benefit from using a 2 or 3 channel external amp for the front soundstage and let the 1500/2500 power the rest of the speakers. This would allow you to drive the Yamaha at relatively loud listening levels for extended periods without experiencing some of the distortion fatigue many mid level receivers encounter when listening close to reference levels (0 dB). Before going that route, though, I would give the 1500/2500 a good battery of listening tests first, you may decide you don't need any additional power... -TD

If that's the case, I think you'll do just fine with a solid mid-level receiver and if you don't mind a refurbished model, you can find quite a few receivers from uBid that would give you a very good solution.

BTW, you don't need HDMI and considering the HDMI formats are changing and the 1.1 release has shown to be problematic with many STB owners, you're better off using component level in/outs at this point for HD/DVD usage... -TD
