Need New Surround Sound

I just purchased a Pioneer 5080 plasma and am looking to upgrade my surround sound. I currently have a Yamaha RX-V750 receiver (not HDMI) and a 5.1 channel Infinity surround system. The receiver was purchased within the past 3 years but I've had the Infinity speakers for about 10+ years. The Infinity sub sounds great so I am just looking for some new speakers including a nice center channel. What can I get in speakers for under $1,000.00? Look foward to your suggestions!

You want all 5 speakers for $1000 or just front two and center?

I'd like to get all 5 if possible but, I want something nice. If i have to sacrifice, I'd settle for the fronts and the center.

Honestly, your probably best using the $1000 towards just L/C/R and leaving the surrounds (or even use your current speakers as surrounds). You can always add new surrounds later as your budget allows.

The most important thing you can do is GO OUT AND AUDITION! I can't stress this enough, speaker choice is pretty personal, and one person's happiness can easily be another's dissapointment. Bring your own test matierial with you. Bring things you will actually watch/listen to, so you have some idea how it will sound on your new speakers. You can do this a BB/Magnolia type stores, but it's worth your while too look in the area you live for some HT boutique shops. You don't necessairly have to purchase from there, but at least you can come out with a knowledge of the types of speakers which you thought sounded good.

Once you have done this, you can come back here, post again with some speakers your considering, and let everyone else here argue it out for you, you get the best sound for your budget, and speakers you'll really love.

obscbyclouds offers sound advice here by getting out there and listening to a few different types of speaker manufacturers. Speaker preference is very subjective, so while one person might prefer the sound from a couple of brands of speakers, another listener might prefer others that may be similar in build quality, specs, pricing, but completely different in the type of sound its able to reproduce.

Try not to limit yourself to just brick and mortar stores as well, such as Best Buy and Circuit City. Unless you're in a very remote location, there's typically quite a few audio dealers around that can work with you on pricing. Also a consideration would be one or a few of the internet direct companies. There's lots to choose from nowadays and many of them are discussed here and other HT forums. One upside to a few of these companies is that they allow a 30-45 day money back guarantee so you can try them in your listening area, which ideally is where you'd want to demo them. the downside is you'd be out the return shipping, so large towers would be a serious consideration before doing this.

Lots of options though, I would suggest going the L/C/R replacement and using existing surrounds for the time being. You'll get the best bang for your buck going this route. If I were able to travel back in time to when I first started actively making my audio equipment purchases, this is surely the way I would've gone.

Then again, if I could travel back in time, that might be a little lower on the priority list behind a few other things... :D -TD

$1000 is a very healthy budget for some fronts and center. Do you want towers of bookshelves? Any size constraints? How big is room? Any WAF constraints? How much music/movie ratio will this be?

No preference on size. I currently have the Infinity bookshelf speakers set on stands in the front so towers would be the same I guess. The room is approx. 14x14 and I will mostly be using them for watching movies/tv.

Make sure the speakers are not a tough load on your amp, get something efficient over 90db, if you do audition speakers (Isure hope you do) you should listen to them with both movies and more important music if you listen to audio aswell, speakers that do good with HT are not always great for music.
