okay, i know jbruno is looking for nearly the same thing below, but i have a slightly different problem. i, right now, have a set of yammie speakers: yamaha speakers and also a 500 watt powered sub i kindof made myself (homemade 50 amp rectifier, boss 500 watt rms digital amp, 12" alpine type R in a bandpass box) now, i just bought a 2500, it's still in the mail, can i save some of these yamaha speakers or are they just COMPLETELY outclassed by the reciever. i have no serious problem getting some new speakers but, as a college kid working a 12 dollar an hour job in the summer, $700 bucks was pretty bad for a reciever in the first place. soooo.... what would you replace first, i am not super concerned about space constraints, i'm not going to live in this apartment forever, but currently my a/v setup is in one corner of a 15' X 15' room, carpet on the floor, sheetrock walls, and a cement ceiling. if anyone has any good suggestions like what is the weakest link in that speaker kit, good, inexpensive replacements, etc. it would be massively appreciated, thanks!

.....OUTSTANDING!!!!!....I was clapping my hands and laughing.....

.....Dear college student who needs all cash reserves to count at this time with too much of it required for things besides tunes, take some one inch thick plywood, and make some three-way speakers, using a three-way crossover from Radio Shack for about 15 bucks....put all three elements on mounted L-pads for balance, and then choose whether you want them for mains or rears....

.....the most important thing you're doing is getting that diploma, understand?....do we need to get you up against the wall and discuss it further?.....

While our buddy Mulestar goes off on his little, ummmmm, sermon on education, shall we say, here's my two cents on the issue.

If you're living in an apartment, getting speakers that will stretch the limits of the RX-V2500 will probably also get you evicted (note.. this sometime has applications as the guys who insisted on playing rap "music" at 1 in the morning on a work night also got to enjoy "Saving Private Ryan" at 5:30 the same morning while I was getting ready for work)...

anyway, if you plan to move before too long, you might as well save up for a year and get some really good quality speakers as a present to yourself for the new place.

the speakers you list do not have bad specs and certainly are price-friendly. The best quality speakers you could get for anywhere near that would be a pair of Athena FS-1's and matching surrounds

you might have to scramble a little to find a matching center. Best Buy shows as being sold out online, but you might try the local store or www.onecall.com or shopping.com.

I'd say enjoy the new toy. Get it a few new DVD's and CD's to play with. Somewhere down the road get it some real playmates. :)

ha! they cant get rid of me :)

sorry i've been gone a few days, i had a broken pipe in a building which brings me to the fact: they can't evict me, i'm the super :) I win. anyways, it's good to hear that those yamahas arn't reallly bad, since i already have them, and it'll take the edge off, also, what kind of drivers would you suggest, and where's a place to get them, oh, one step further, is it an acceptable idea to build speakers with car audio drivers? it seems like they're pretty cutting edge, and lots of them have exotic cone materials, great spl and are pretty inexpensive, at least compared to home audio equipment, hell, the sub sounds pretty dangerous, especially compared to powered house subs in it's price range (250 bux) , buuuttttttt anyways, if anyone has any answers to these questions, that would be great, thanks!!!

p.s. i was in best buy yesterday and saw some new cheap athenas that had like eleven or twelve three inch drivers, what's everybody's opinion on that?

You can buy car subs for your home system, but I'd recommend finding 8 ohm subs over the typical 4ohm unless you have an amp that can properly drive it. The Alpine Type R is an outstanding sub. With the right box, it should do wonders for your neighbors. I pulled a 10" home sub out and installed a Kenwood car sub in my box, and found the car sub was extremely inefficient, but had much better bottom end bass. I think the amps on the home subs are weak compared to the the better one and two channel car amps. It's almost impossible to get the same bass in your home as in your car. Such a smaller space to fill in a car. A member here built this home sub with an MTX woofer. It gets down to 16Hz. Very very deep, but no punch. As far as the new Athena splinter speakers go, they are fine along a plasma tv, but not what an Audioholic would purchase for his system.

try www.madisound.com or www.*****************. they both carry a really good selection of replacement pieces. I can't help you much with selecting a new driver, but the Vifa products get a lot of positive press on this site.

as mentioned above, you should definitely stick with a 6 or 8 ohm speaker. the Yammy is not real good with 4 ohm products.

Try the following;

PSB Alpha series; If you can swing it, Pair of AlphaTs for your left and right speakers, Alpha Bs for your surrounds and an Alpha C for your center. If thats a lil too pricey,try Alpha Cs all around.
