right now i have an old school setup... consisting of a Technics SA-EX700 with a pair of Pioneer CS-R590... and im running a PS3 through them... but it sucks. i really want a new receiver so i can get a digital optical cable for sound.. i am broke and if i sell these ill probably get under 200 bucks.. so i need to get a decent pair of speakers with a nice receiver for let say under 500 bucks altogether.. and please no back of a van speakers

You can pick up a pair of begringer 2030Ps for under 150 a pair, add something like a 250 onkyo refurb avr and a dayton 10" sub for 150 and that will give you at least an updated avr with sub managment and the digital connections you need. Check out the budget bookshelve shootout in the loudspeaker section.

The Behringers are exactly what I was going to suggest.

Are you wanting surround sound?

I would suggest getting some Infinity Betas and maybe a Panasonic HE100. All are decent cheap stuff.

Browse Craigslist for dirt-cheap bargains - you may find something there that will serve your needs and keep you under budget. I picked up a $200 retail Yamaha sub - nearly brand new with not a scratch on it for only $40 from a motivated seller (he had just moved into an apartment, couldn't use it and needed the $$).

If your patient you can also score some good deals in the harmon kardon/infinity ebay store. It's mostly rerub, but has the full warranty.

hey guys thanks alot for the suggestions... the thing is i dont know where to find this stuff.. i cant buy online either and im located in toronto... i wouldnt know where to start looking... craigslist and kijiji are great places too. but i dont know who to trust... also there are so many different choices... im not good with brands or models... so i dont know what to look for either...and no im not looking for a surround sound system just a simple one for my room that i can use the PS3 for blu ray and i want good sound for crazy movies....my current old school setup is decent.. but the receiver is dying out on me so i mainly i need a decent and recent receiver preferably with digital optical output.. please keep replying and give me more choices...oh and my room is not that big either its like a 8x8

the behringers look amazing.. i can put that on top of my pioneers... is the onkyo 506 recent? it looks really nice and even has HDMI so im guessing not too old? i live in canada so i cant register to club onkyo.. i dont even have a credit card yet... im still a student... so does everyone here agree that a pair of Behringer 2030P and a onkyo 560 is a good choice for under 300? can someone give me links to these products so i can try and get them... if you guys can get me a link to a Dayton 100 sub that would be nice...
