I am planning on purchasing a new receiver and I am looking for your help. I would like to stay around $500.00 but can probably spend a little more if I need to. I plan on adding a separate amp in the future to power my front speakers (any suggestions on an amp would also help). I would like your opinions on which receiver will give me the most power and best quality. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My front speakers are Polk Monitor 50’s, center is a Polk CS2, and Polk Monitor 30’s for surround. I will be purchasing a SVS sub soon to replace my current JVC sub. I mostly watch movie but do listen to music occasionally. If there is a better choice that I have not listed please let me know. Thank you for you help.

Yamaha HTR-5860 $318.00
Denon Avr-2106 B-Stock $449.98
Pioneer VSX-1015 $449.00
Onkyo TXSR703 $538.00

i personally would go with the onkyo 703. i had the 701 a while back and it was great. if i were you. I would go and demo the ones your interested in. Best is to hear them for yourself. If you can't get a demo on all of them. start looking at reviews. eccoustics.com is a good place for reviews. But don't put all your faith in reviews. I've looked at hundreds and haven't found one where the product wasn't liked. so either audio products are near perfect, or it just doesn't pay to put out a truthful review.

at that price, feature-for-feature, the Harmon-Kardon AVR-435 is a solid value. the upgradeable software will help protect against Dolby/DTS changes in the future.

if you watch Ubid, you can sometimes find them selling the Yamaha RX-V2500 with shipping for under $ 500. It's a little weak on the video side, but incredibly flexible on the audio side, especially if you do add an amp for the front channels.

you might take a look at the Outlaw single-channel amps, as you can add more whenever the budget allows.

Lots of people around he seem to like the Pioneer VSX-1015TX. I do not own it but played with it in the store a lot and it was very solid. It has all the features you seem to be looking for. The HK recomendation is good also. I have an AVR 635 and love it, except does the 435 upconvert s-vid and composite to component?

ACS,

Does your 5860 not have pre-outs for an amp? That's only one model below the 5890, which is practically the 1500, and IMO a perfectly fine AVR. I'm not seeing that much of a step up with the budget you've listed, unless all you are looking for is the ability to hook up an external amp. The 2500 from Ubid is the best you are going to do with that budget IMO.

Yes the Yamaha HTR-5860 has pre outs. I like all the receivers that I have looked at and all of them seem to have what I am looking for. It makes it a very difficult decision. Thank you for your input.

Outlaw Audio Model 1070

If you can spend a little more money I suggest you check out the Outlaw Audio web Site.
They offer a lot for the money. The Model 1070 (7x65W) is an incredible new replacement for our classic Model 1050 that is set to redefine value (yes, again) and turn the home theater world on its ears. $899 I think it is worth you time to take a look.
Happy Shopping

Also take a look at the Marantz SR4600 and 5600 models. Both have preamps which you would need for an external amp. Marantz has great preamps, if not an option, go with the Onkyo.

If your receiver has pre-outs, why are you looking for a more expensive AVR with pre-outs?

Current Receiver

Buckyfan 1 my current receiver is a 100w per channel JVC I purchesed 4 years ago. It was a home theater in a box deal and does not have pre outs. I sounds ok but is very limitied when it comes to audio/video connections. It was my first experience in home theater and it has served it's purposes.
