i was hoping for a little information.

we are liquidating an estate and amongst the items are 2 altec lansing 826 A ionic speakers. they are monsters; 39 inches by 22 by 21. i think they probably date back to the early '60's at least. i don't begin to know if they are saleable or what they would be worth (all i can find online are newer, smaller altec lansings).

any information you could provide would be so greatly appreciated.

Look on the frame of the woofer- it will have a six digit number starting with 391 and the last three digits correspond to the manufacturing date. The 4th is the last digit of the year and the last two tell which week of that year.

I don't know how much they worth to collector now, but if the speakers are from 1954, the original price of $324 is about $2500 or more in 2011 dollars :)

thanks for your replies. i did find the lansing heritage site and have uncovered a little more info. these were taken out of the stanley theater in pittsburgh PA, which was a venue for stage shows and rock concerts as well as a movie theater, so i'm guessing they were not originally intended for home use. i haven't opened the cabinets to look at the speakers themselves, but will do so to get an accurate date of manufacture.

my biggest question is what would be a fair price for them? does $600 seem too high/low?

will check back later to see if anyone has any thoughts...

thanks again :)

If anything historic can be tied to them, get it in writing, preferably with photos. If the theater is still open, get any info you can but the price is up to the people doing the deal. If you think it's a reasonable price, buy them. Speakers like these have a definite "sound" and you may like it. They also tend to be very efficient.
