need help with surround upgrades...

Hello,
I have a 8-9yr old "home theatre in a box system" by Kenwood. It's a 5.1 channel with a real 5.1 Kenwood receiver, model VR-716. I would like to keep the receiver and sub but upgrade the speakers. They are very small, about 2 1/2" wide speaker. The tweeters can't be more than half inch if that. Not much sound as you can imagine.

I started playing around and hooked up my old Realistic Minimus 7 speakers from the late 70's as the left and right front speakers. Wow, what a diff! Now I thought a center channel speaker would be the next logical upgrade. I've found lots of them on Craigs List... DCM, Polk CS2, Polk CS2 Series II, Bic America DV62-CLR, Definitive Technology C/L/R 1000, Polk CSi25, Polk TSX150C, etc. They all look nice and look like they will certainly do the job, but I've seen on an old post here, that mis-matched speakers are NOT recommeded because the "timbre" will be off. Not sure what that is, but sounds like I need further education from you people who can help this neophyte.

At any rate, I'm trying to upgrade on a budget and thus, the craigslist searching. I would appreciate any and all suggestions, also which brands to avoid. Should I look to buy a "matching" speaker system, or do any mismatched brands/models have you found that worked just fine. thanks much.

@20Steve Hi!

Whats most important in matching the front L/C/R is having a similar tweeter. Identical is preferred but many similar dome materials (soft or metal) can play well together. Speakers that well aged though, not sure you're going to find a good match.

Tell more about your room (dimensions, listening distance) listening habits (music vs movies) and a budget.

The Warrior,
Okay, I thought the 70's speakers were "pushing it" a bit.....I use this system to watch movies 60% of the time and listen to music 40%.

My system is in a large cabinet with the tv in the middle and the speakers in the top shelves of the adjacent cabinet shelving that is part of the overall 3 piece home theatre cabinet. The room is approx 19ft X 13.5ft. budget is $200-$300.

^ Plus one for the Affordable Accuracy monitors! You CANNOT buy better speakers for the money! Dennis is a great guy whom I've enjoyed communicating with!

Your only problem is going to be putting ANY speaker inside of a cabinet. It will resonate, creating its own sound track.

Where are you located? I've got a BIC DV62-CLR center speaker sitting here, collecting dust. $40 or best offer. ;)
