I just got my onkyo 876 but was having some issues setting it up and wanted to see if anyone was having the same issue.
1. When using the audyssey speaker setup it set there was an error with the left rear speaker. There is sound and its connected. It connected correctly.

2. Also I am trying to get the dolby truHD to play but it keeps saying the dolby prologicII or multichannel. I have the DVD set for TruHD audio. I am playing a PS3 for the bluray. Should I set it for PCM or bitrate for the audio out? Is there a good source on how to properly set it up?
Thanks

Oh setup issues.....so here are some ideas to your questions:

1) Be sure you have your speaker cable +/- connections correct from the AVR to the speakers. I know the Audyssey will give errors for when you have the polarity reversed...and your speaker still will sound with the polarity reversed so this might be the issue...

2) In order to have your AVR decode the HD formats you need to have a player that will bitstream the HD codec to the player-----the PS3 does NOT bitstream the HD codecs unfortunately....

It does however decode them internally....So set your movie to the TruHD format and the PS3 will decode it internally and then send it via PCM to your AVR over the HDMI connection. There is no loss here...just that you don't get to see TruHD light up on your AVR display.

That aside, be sure the PS3 is set to PCM output over the HDMI and that you also have the latest firmware update that enables the PS3 to decode the HD codes....Let us know if you have any more set-up issues...

Thats a huge help, thanks. I'll try it when i get home (I'm working nights right now). The PS3 does have a audio setting to send things in bit stream. But what you're saying is that I set it to PCM and the decoded signal gets processed in the receiver. I didnt see a setting for TruHD in the PS3. I'll look later on. So what audio setting do I put for that HDMI input in the reciever? Will it just say multichanel on the receiver? I'm a little new at all this. Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how it goes.

setting PS3 to PCM will decode in the PS3 and send the decoded signal over hdmi to the onkyo. So while watching movies you won't see True HD or HD Master on the receiver you will probably see Multichannel. I don't have a PS3 so I can't say for definite but if you see the option to bitstream use that. and the receiver will display the formate you are hearing.

and I agree with Chopin_Guy on check the polarity.

So I checked the polarity and it was ok. I even changed it just to make sure and I got the same "speaker detect error" message. The sound is coming through the speaker though. This is frustrating. I changed the PS3 output to bitstream but all that came out was the dolby PLII. I set it to PCM and it just says multichannel on the receiver so I cant be sure if its TrueHD or not. To be honest I wasnt blown away by the sound. It sounds similar to dolby digital. Im kind of at a loss here.

Just hit the display button on the PS3 (TRIANGLE) and it will show you if it is playing DD, DDHD or DTSHD.

Thanks. I'm not sure why it wont recognize the speaker. Could there be a functional problem and the speaker needs to be replaced even though its putting out sound? And how do I toggle between DD, Dolby TrueHD and the other sound formats put out by the player? It just says its playig Dolby digital 5.1. I have all the formats selected in the PS3 audio settings.

There is likely a wire issue so just carefully inspect the wire on the speaker that is causing issues. Maybe it has an odd strand at the AVR or at the speaker. Maybe a banana issue, recheck it all.

If using the Sony BT remote just keep hitting "audio" on the remote and it will scroll through your options.

I am sorry, on the game remote you hit "select" to pull up the display. Hit "triangle" to pull up option menu, go into "Audio" and select the format you would like to use.

Can you swap your left and right rear speaker? See if the audessy error follows the speaker or the channel.

As for the ps3 if you set it to bitstream it will play the regular dd, or dts track.
It wont bitstream the HD audio tracks. Set it to pcm out and your reciever will show muti-track.
