Need Help With Pioneer Vsx D 509s

Receiver-- As my name implies, I am a true audiomoron. I was unhooking my broken Cd player and hooking up DVR to my system, which I've had for awhile, and I've managed to mess up my system. My surround, subwoofer, and "B" speakers no longer work. My B speakers are my outdoor speakers, but they're plugged into the B slot. Only my front speakers work now. I did try to change my settings, as my surround speakers (small Polk Audios) have never sounded good. I also accidently plugged in something with the receiver on. So, I think I either changed a setting (doubtful, because I can't find it), or blew a fuse or a channel. I have a few questions, and I'd be eternally grateful for any help:
1-Any suggestions on what to do?
2-If I've blown a fuse, how do I change?
3-My stereo sounds like junk. I think my speakers are too small. Is anyone familiar with the Polk Audio small 5/1 system?
4-I just figured out that I had an analog hookup between my DVD and my receiver. How much difference would an optical cable make? I bought one, and hooked it up, but my received won't change to digital mode, so something is wrong there also.
5-When I try to switch my receiver's speaker setting from A to B, B won't even shows up. It either shows A or nothing. The cables appear to be hooked up just fine.

I can't even get my receiver to do the "test" mode for the speakers that work. Thanks in advance for any help.

On question 4, once you get your receiver repaired, it might be worth trying out using an optical connection. You'll probably need to set up the digital input on your receiver using the on-screen menu. Using the optical cable may improve sound quality because the analogue circuitry in the CD/DVD player is bypassed. You need to use an optical or electrical digital cable if you want Dolby Digital or DTS, that is unless you have several analogue connectors.

Thanks TBEWICK---One more question

You said, "once you get your receiver repaired.....", so my guess is it obviously needs a repair job??? I hate to repair, because it's $100 minimum usually, so I almost might as well buy something new.
