Ok I am looking for some help on my situation here..... A month or two ago, my Yamaha RXV1500 receiver started having problems. I would turn it on, and as soon as it would click to activate it would shut off. I looked in the manual and did the things it said, one which was unplug for 30 seconds and retry. Also unhooked everything from the back of the receiver including speakers all RCAs, everything except the power cord and it still would shut off. Nothing worked so I took it in to get fixed on warrenty. I get a call a few days later saying there is nothing wrong with it and it works just fine. So I drive back into the city (about a 2 hour drive) to pick up my receiver. They says that sometimes if it gets shocked or something, you have to unplug it for a day or two before it resets it self, not 30 seconds like the manual says. So I take it home and it works fine. So I'm all mad I just wasted two trips to the city for nothing but whatever atleast it works. Has been working great up until a couple days ago it did the same thing. I unhooked everything again to make sure it wasnt that and it wasnt so I unplugged it and let it sit overnight and all the next day. That next night I tried it and it worked again. Now I wake up this morning and it is doing it again so at the moment it is unplugged sitting..... I want to know has this happened to anyone else or does anyone know what could be causing this or anyone just have any words of advice or anything! This is really annoying spending that much on a receiver less then 2 years ago and it is giving this much trouble... Awaiting your replies and your help.....

Thanks

The most common reasons for a reciever to shut off as you are describing are: Overheating(which doesn't seem to be your problem), short circuit in the speaker connection(not the case if your speakers are disconnected, assuming there aren't any stray wires touching the chassis of the reciever), or short circuits inside the reciever due to a faulty part inside. It sounds like it is a defective part inside that is short circuiting causing something inside to overheat and trip the thermal protection right away or after a little bit of use. Contact Yamaha if the dealer isn't giving you any help, if it's under warranty then you should get the problem worked out. If not, you may have to pay a bit more.

I had a similar problem with my old Yammy. It had a faulty power circuit board and was fixed under warranty, but it took 3 trips to the authorized service center to convince them that it was not speaker wire shorts or something I did, but something inside the receiver.

They also informed me that once the protection circuit trips, for whatever reason, it may or may not reset itself (even if you leave the receiver unplugged for days).

Just to be on the safe side check your speaker wires. Use a multimeter if available or buy a cheap continuity tester from Home Depot or Lowes. At least you will be able to eliminate that as one of the causes.
