Hello all,

Does anyone else out there have one of these 42" LG LCDs? I just got mine today and I going through the set up modes and would like to activate the "caption" function listed in the "Option" menu, but my "caption" function is greyed out. Can anyone tell me how to ungrey/activate the "caption" function?

Thank you

Mine is also? LG LC7D model. The XD is also grayed out in the video option? Gonna look into this more on line. There is nothing in the manual about it. Strange!

Yes I have 2 of those 'exact' model TVs. (SEE HERE)
It may depend on what source is coming in.
But I find mine is ok.

Click menu, go down to options, areas will be greyed out, but there should captions, click on it anyways, then in the submenu set to on, then set your preferred font, exit. Done.
It may be easier if I just post pics.
Let me know, if you have tried the above sequence first.

The XD is also grayed out in the video option?!
The XD can only be turned on, dependant on source. (well that is with the 42LB5D)

EDIT; Mistake, the only way XD can be turned on is in the 'User' modes.
Take the mode out of auto, dynamic, etc...
You will then be able to control XD.
And some items in there are dependant on source.

---I am using HDMI.

---That's the problem, it is greyed out, so I am unable to click on it.

If you are using a DVD (or BD & HD) player, then the captions will be controlled from there.
If you are talking about a TV )OTA) source, then it should be turned on.

I don't know about this particular TV but if the station you are tuned to is not broadcasting closed captions, I'd expect the menu option to be grayed out.

If you are tuned to a station that does offer CC then I'd expect the menu option to be available and when you tune to another station that is not broadcasting CC information, it should do nothing even if you previously set it to On from the prior station.

Yes, you would think that would be the case, but it isn't. I finally got through to LG Support last night (early this morning) and they were not able to help me resolve the problem. They said the greyed out CC is caused from using an HDMI cable. They said CC only works with antenna or compsite cable use. They said it is either/or, meaning, I can get CC or HD, but not both because the HD cables over ride the CC. This does not make much sense to me, but again I am really new at this, but I guess this means hearing impared people might as well forget HD TVs.

How are you getting your HD material?

By the time the picture is ready to be displayed, the Cc material has already been incorporated into it. It must be done prioer to the that.

Antenna? Then it SHOULD offer that option. (The internal tuner is a source in itself.)

Cable/Satellite STB? Check it's manual for a CC option.

HD-DVD? Check the DVD for a cc option. I know our plain old Tosh DVD offers it.

I guess I am sounding like a broken record, so I won't keep beating this horse. It looks like from some google searching that this is a big problem with the hearing impared and at the moment, with the state of current technology, there is absolutely no way to receive CC if your are using HDMI or component cables as they can’t currently transmit digital closed captions. So I guess my options are limited. . . like return the TV.

Well I stumbled onto the solution to my problem, finally, but no thanks to any of the tech at my cable company who provided me with my cable box or with the mfg of my LG LCD TV (Model # 42LB5D). I am amazed that these tech don't know this stuff since it is such a big issue (to some people). Anyway, here it is. I'll also post this under a new and more clear caption for anyone else who might have this problem.

My HD Cable service provider is Charter.
My TV is a LG LCT 42" (Model # 42LB5D).
My cable box is a Motorola DCH 6416.

Solution to getting closed caption is to turn the tv on, the cable box off (it must be off). On the front of the cable box press the menu button (again box must be off!), and this will bring up the "user setting options) and among many is the closed caption option. My CC was set to off. I turned it on and now all is well. Also, there are other option available listed there to fine tune the HD reception.

I hope this is clear and of help to someone out there. It breaks my heart to read on Google all of the problems the hearing impared are having with this issue. The solution is simple once you find it . . . Isn't that the way it always is. It is just too bad that when you go to the tech support who should be on top to this stuff they don't have a clue.

So, you stumbled on investigating the cable box STB for the problem all by yourself, eh?

Good for you!

I don't have a cable box but this is good info.
A couple of suggestions:
Call LG service and ask the same question for them. When they give you the wrong answer, ask what is needed to change their response card and tell them the right answer:D
Do the same for the cable company.

Also, if you would list the options in that cable box, perhaps it might help others.
