My friend and I have decided to build a sound system for our get togethers. But we don't want just some home theater system. We want to build our own, using car speakers. Our only dilemma is powering them. We thought we could just power it all with car amplifiers if we could convert the power from 110 volts to 12 volts. However, I cannot find the right converter for such a thing. If someone can help me find the right converter or come up with a different idea on how to power everything, please let me know. Thanks!

My vote is different idea all together....kinda like my little brother in 83 trying to install his 6.5 coaxs in the wall and asking how do I hook up the amp, where does the head unit go

Here you go. Here's enough rope for you to hang yourself. Stick a large cap inline to handle the peaks, and try not to burn your house down.

Optionally, you could use an ATX PC power supply instead. OutletPC usually has some pretty good deals. Go for one with a 120mm fan for quieter operation. See this page for how to short the mobo connector to hack it into powering on without being plugged into a PC. Then just use the yellow + a black wire from any of the PSU's molex connectors to power your amp. You'll still need the 1.0+ farad cap to handle peaks.

Hey was sent here by crossedover, with the question "

Hey guys and girls, i have a spare pair of 540w 5 way pioneer 6x9's and an amp, so i thought id make use of it and build a little hifi style thing.

However should the enclosures for each of these speakers be closed or ported, and how big should these dimensions be ?
would really appreciate the help and thanks in advanced

Mikey.""

and help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Mikey, give these a try. I'd stuff em with lots of PolyFil.

Don't be disappointed if they sound weak in your house, though. 6x9s are designed for use in a car, where the entire trunk acts as an enclosure and the cabin's small internal volume focuses the sound. They probably won't be able to fill a 2500ft³ bedroom nearly as easily.

@microman23 see a guy around using dell server psu to power an amp, eahc one he had was capable of running 980 watts easy, all the rails inside were 12v for each and they're cheap.
((po11 / dell poweredge 2800 power supply aa23290 dpn r1447))

additionally these server units can be "daisy chained" apparently.

Car audio is for cars and not homes. Don't even think about using car audio in a home. It will be a disaster.
