I'd just like to know what u guys would buy if u had x ammount of dollars.

I have bev high def and a 46in sony wega. I don't need killer volume or bass, just want clean sound. No need to shake the dishes and blow out windows.

I need a reciever and all speakers.

Any suggestions on best bang for the buck?

Say I wanted to spend 2k.. or 3k.. What should I be looking at and why.

Sorry for the general question but I'd rather ask you guys than a salesman.

thanks

Denon AVR2805 $899
Wharfedale EVO 30 $900 pair
Wharfedale Bipolar surrounds $370 pair (X 2 if you want 7.1)
Wharfedale EVO center 1 $400
Reel Acoustics RSW1215 250watt 12" sub $ 420 (ignor the stats on this one it hammers like most 15's)

You're under $3k for 5.1 and it's one you could be proud of.
If you want to cut a few dollars use the Wharfedale Diamond 9 series instead of the EVO's. The only major difference is the cabinets are not real hardwood. :D

The Wharfedale Evo's are also MDF - just have real wood finish on top. But yes, I love those speakers. I'm busy trying to decide between them and the Diamond 9's - and it's a tough one :) The Evo's are just sooo pretty, but they cost about twice as much.

kay,
You are correct EVO is a Hardwood veneer where the diamind 9 has a vinyl veneer.
I have a set of EVO10's on stands in my showroom in the Rosewood finish. I also have a pair of the Diamond 9.5 and the center, but I haven't had time to install them yet. They are still sitting in the boxes.

You're a lucky man - I love the Evo's! I can't believe that that's the only difference between the two though? I'm looking at buying a set of 2x9.4/2x9.1/9.CS for a very good price. I've heard them and they didn't sound as amazing as the Evo's, but they were brand new and not broken in yet. I believe Wharfedale's usually improve quite a bit with some running in. That's the only thing that's stopping me from going and buying the Diamond 9's tomorrow... ok, that and they're only available in black here :(

Kay,
Did you know that Wharfedale makes every piece of their speakers? As far as the difference between the two. My rep has told me that, so thats all I have to go on. I have only heard a pair of Diamond 9.2's and they sounded great pushed with a Denon 3805.

Hey guys, I bought a system. Keep in mind this is for a small room, 11ft wide X 15ft deep, and it's in a basement with 8ft ceilings and hardwood floors.
Nothing special at all, but cheaper than I could have built my own speakers for.

This is in cdn dollars...

Picked up...

Yamaha htr5860

Infinity Primus 250 towers
4 Infinity Primus 150's for surround
Primus center channel
a small ps-8 sub

I paid 1500.00cdn for everything.. +txs of course.. And I opted for the 10 year no BS replacement warranty for 150 bux...

Did I get a good deal? It sounds great in this room, and I plan on eventually using everything in the bedroom in a few years when I replace it with a better setup. I was worried the 8in sub would suck but im glad i didn't spend an extra 350 to get the 12in, that little 8 pounds this room...

I'm really happy with the sound, I can hear the vocals without straining, it's not too loud - but when the action starts it shakes the room. I also like the nightime viewing mode on the Yamaha. Works perfect.

Ohh yeah, I got some really nice chrome speaker stands from Ikea for 24.99 a pair!! They look great!

Thanks guys.

Yes, I do know that - that's in part the reason why they're so good at the pricepoint.

I have seen the Diamond 9s (9.4 and 9.1 in particular) and compared them to the EVO 8 and 30 resp., they're similar in shape but I don't feel they're identical. Of course good technology trickles down and they probably share most of the driver/tweeter design, internal layout and bracing etc.

I just bought a Denon AVR-2105 and am considering getting a pair of Diamonod 9.1's for the time being, which can later become "zone B" speakers when I get the full B&W setup :D

Slap. Very nice setup. Infinitys are known for their smooth sound, and being well built. Excellent customer service from the parent company, Harman Int'l. The receiver was a great choice, too. Plenty of power on reserve when you need it. Yamaha and Infinity pair up very good. I had a stereo setup of the two brands about 10 years ago and loved it.
